it seems the village of Asharoken wants the taxpayers of Huntington town (and possibly all of Suffolk county's taxpayers) to help subsidize their sand dune restoration project while still keeping their beaches exclusive for their own use. The village is initially responsible for approximately 2.5 mil (after distribution of Sandy funds) and 8.7 mil down the road.
There is an effort by the feds to have three "entryways" to the beach along Asharoken Ave. since they are using Sandy funds but I'm curious how many parking spaces would be available.
That is one town where I always drive way below the speed limit.

I'll get a kick out of this battle, being from the area. I'm all for public beach access. It should be noted, however that there are no shortage of public beaches in the area. Hobart Beach in Eaton's Neck is town of Huntington and never gets too crowded and there's Crab Meadow, also Town of Huntington, and if you know what to do, residency doesn't really matter at all, and of course there's Sunken Meadow. There's also Steers Beach which I think is a Northport Village park, but it's always grossed me out given its home to a storm water outfall pipe and literally in the shadow of the power plant.

Yeah, this seems ridiculous. North Shore beaches are rocky and undesirable anyways so it's not like they would have a rush of outsiders in the summer..
