My husband and I recently got jobs in New York and need help finding an apartment. I will be working in Stony Brook and driving and he will be working in Jamaica and taking the LIRR. Luckily that gives a lot of potential routes but we're not from the area so we have no idea what the neighborhoods are like. A few descriptors:
1) We would prefer to be WALKABLE to an LIRR station to take away the added hassle of finding parking in the morning
2) We are in our mid/late 20's with no kids so school districts don't matter, and any place that's newer/trendy for young couples would be amazing (ie a downtown area, bars, gym, etc)
3) Safety is a big factor
4) It doesn't have to be exactly halfway, we're willing to give or take about 20 min
5) Either suggestions of good towns or links to legitimate apartment complexes would be extremely helpful (we've already discovered how untrustworthy craigslist and such can be)
Anyways that's already a lot to factor in I'm sure, but any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Reason: Oh and our price range is about 1500-2500 for a one bedroom

There is a bunch of new Apartments that have gone up near the Farmingdale train station (with more being built). These would be a perfect fit provided they are in your budget.
Thanks for the reply guys! I've been seeing a lot of positive things about Farmingdale. Besides the Jefferson, does anyone know the names of other buildings/complexes? Our budget is about 2500 for a 1 bedroom but some wiggle room if we can find something that fits all our needs. And the one commuting by train is going to Jamaica!
If both people needed the LIRR, I would suggest Mineola as well.

Also, for Farmingdale, in the event that you can't use your car for whatever reason, it's still possible to use transit. Either take the S1 up Route 110 to Huntington for the Port Jefferson Branch, or take the LIRR to Hicksville for the Port Jefferson Branch.

I think you should be able to find something from the list above.
