Check out this link and related article. Charlotte # 9, NY #4....
In Pictures: America's Most Miserable Cities - Forbes.com "The biggest surprise on our list is Charlotte, N.C., which is ranked ninth. Charlotte has undergone tremendous economic growth the past decade, while the population has soared 32%. But the current picture isn't as bright. Employment growth has not kept up with population growth, meaning unemployment rates are up more than 50% compared with 10 years ago. Charlotte scored in the bottom half of all six categories we examined. It scored the worst on violent crime, ranking 140th" |

My wife and I are from LI and now live in Charlotte. Its ok here not the change in life we thought it would be. Jobs are tough to get here becuase of the large influx to the area and consequently so is traffic. Cary NC is very nice, thats where my wife and I were originally looking to go, but the job came about in charlotte. If you do decide to come here , rent for a year or two before buying. We are rentign and will give it another 2 years here and if it doesnt feel like home then its back to LI we go

[quote=Glad2BHere;2821312]Not me...friends of mine moved down a few years ago. I visited them and I was not impressed at all. Sure there were nice homes for a lot less $, but that alone isn't a good enough reason for me to move.
I find your comment that North Carolina was "diverse and boring" odd as if though there was some correlation to be formed between the two. As for it being "hicky" I would counter that it's way too easy to confuse a southern accent for a backwards mentality. Wake County is no more or less boring then Suffolk County and if you're not someone who routinely exploits the myriad offerings of New York City then there's almost no discernible difference between the two. As for the alleged car shooting I don't believe it, literally. If there was any evidence to support such a claim the police would respond in an appropriate way. The way you tell the story would make it seem as if though gun fire is normal and an accepted part of life in North Carolina which is completely not the truth. The police are not any more lenient than on Long Island. Lastly the school system in Wake County presents some challenges but the quality of the teachers and curriculum is at least as good as what we experienced on Long Island. My oldest son has routinely pointed out that he likes school in Wake County better then Northport because the teachers are more involved and challenge him. WHAT DOES THAT TELL YOU!!!!! WOW! Everyone moving to NC from LI and NJ thinking they are "escaping" the lifestyle of those areas is so terribly mistaken and naive....YOU'RE BRINGING IT ALONG WITH YOU! I can't get over how many people come to NC from that region, think its utopia, and then tell everyone else from NY and NJ to come on down too....as if that won't make it JUST LIKE LI AND NJ...cost of living and everything!

The story about the car window being shot out was 100% true. They did not find a bullet or a pellet, so they weren't sure what it was. But this just happened in Dec, entirely true. Wasn't implying it was normal regarding the window being shot at. Just stating that with all of the woodsy areas, it does not surprise me someone is lurking in them, playing target practice. |

The metro areas of Raleigh, Charlotte and Wilmington are growing. Homes, and I mean brand new homes, are very affordable compared to what we have here. The air is cleaner - or at least seems so. If Long Islanders go down there in large numbers they are likely to make things better, since so many of us care about education, Long Islanders would demand improvements. Some southerners would see this as complaining, but it is the sort of thing that needs to be done. We can't keep silent when we know things can be better. I'm all for relocating down there - if I could. I'm stuck here because of my job. But if something happened where I had to move North Carolina would be one of my top three choices. Either Wake County or Union County. |

I have been in NC for 5 years, and even if taxes increase in NC, the taxes are still INCREASING in LI. I could see your point if LI taxes are now capped, but they are not, my old home(small 55 years old) had a property tax increase in 5 years of around 3400.00, my NC property only 200.00 in 5 years. I guess I will stay naive . I know what I left and I know what I have now. I will take my chances(and money) all the way to the bank. Actually growth has slowed down somewhat here since the housing market in the North is doing so poorly. We made too much money to be living the way we were forced to and we found a place where our incomes give us the lifestyle we want. |
