My sister followed my parents south. She misses some of her friends (who also left LI for other regions) but has some form of family nearby, which made the transition easier. This was 10+ years ago; I doubt she's ever coming back now. Moving there allowed her to have things she wasn't going to have up here -- like children.
I miss my family, but understand why they had to leave. I don't get to see them as much as I would like to, either. If my parents hadn't left, it wouldn't be so tough. Basically I was left all alone in NY. I have no immediate family here. We were a very close family.
If you are very close with your family and are leaving them behind, this might play with your heartstrings when it is time to make the big move.
I wish you all of the best.

I left and can't think of how I'd ever go back except visiting to get my fix of my favorite beaches, towns, restaurants and friends. In all honesty at first I wanted to go back, but as I got more established down here the less I needed to live on the Island.

I lived in Florida 30 years ago and never wanted to ever return. I had to come back because my husband was out of work on LI for almost a year and Florida was where he got a job. I hated it here 30 years ago and still do. I hope we can move back to NY when we retire in maybe 6 or 7 years. I hope I can last that long.

I will be moving back to Long Island in the spring to be closer to family. My son and I live in Kansas. Reading this board is making me really nervous about coming home!!

Why is that? LI is great, don't let the "no" crowd of "haters" on this board dissuade you in any way.

We relocated away from Long Island last year. Although we love Long Island and miss much of what it offers we would only move back if my career required it.
What we miss the most is mostly offset by what we love about living in North Carolina. The benefits we anticipated in making the move have panned out and I doubt we'd ever be willing to give those up in order to return.
However if it wasn't for the overwhelming burden placed upon us by the cost of living on Long Island we never would have moved to begin with. Beyond the economics of the region it's about as great a place to live as any I've known.
