For us, my parents in Queens followed relatives who moved here for the schools years earlier.

My family came here from overseas via Brooklyn.
They moved out to "the country" to escape the dirty smelly city.
60 or 70 years later and the country IS the dirty smelly city.
Back then Nassau was the country.
My family also came overseas via brookyln.
Left brooklyn in late 70s.
Lived in queens until mid 80s until we moved to LI.
Lived in Great neck till I graduated HS in early 90s.
Went to college and med school in NYC till I graduated in 2000.
Lived in midwest for medical residency/fellowship (Minnesota, then chicago) until mid 2000s
Returned to Brooklyn to work and live since mid 2000s
Marriage, and 2 kids latter, moved to LI last year because the rent to damn high.
My parents came to NYC from overseas and initially settled in Brooklyn, then Queens when I started 1st grade. I moved around in Queens up until college when I lived in upstate NY. Came back to Queens for law school, then moved to LI (Nassau) when I got married. My husband is a native LIer.
Dad grew up in Mahattan and mom in NH. Dad went to college in NH. Neither wanted to stay in NH. They lived in the Pelham section of the Bronx when first married and then moved to LI - mainly because dads parents had relocated to Queens by then.
They lived in Levittown and then moved to Huntington...which all of my dads co workers in the city told him was the country and he was insane lol. But my dad had had enough of concrete.
