Hempstead has great homes (Union, Uniondale: real estate, houses, neighborhood)

If anyone is looking to move from the city(5 boroughs) to a more surburban neighborhood, but at the same time, not far from, stores, walking trails, restaurants etc. Hempstead is a great place to live. Hempstead has a lot of large beautiful homes for affordable prices. If you compare the homes there to homes in other parts of Nassau County, the homes aren't as large and stylish.

For those who may not be familiar with Hempstead:

It is important to know that there are 3 "Hempsteads" (from smallest to largest, in order of acreage):

1. There is the Village of Hempstead (2,327 acres);

2. There is the "Hempstead, NY 11550" postal zone (2,652 acres), and it includes the Village of Hempstead and parts of other adjacent hamlets within its service area; and,

3. There is the Town of Hempstead (89,688 acres), and it includes 22 villages and 36 hamlets as well as the Hempstead, NY 11550 postal zone and other postal zones, within its borders.

Hempstead is a village (incorporated in 1853) in the north-center section of the Town of Hempstead, in the central part of Nassau County.

Beginning on its northern border and proceeding clockwise, the Village of Hempstead in the Town of Hempstead is bordered on the north by the Village of Garden City and the Hamlet of East Garden City; on the east by the Hamlet of East Garden City and the Hamlet of Uniondale; on the south by the Hamlet of Baldwin and the Hamlet of South Hempstead; and, on the west by the Hamlet of West Hempstead.

The Village of Hempstead has a different border than does the "Hempstead, NY 11550" postal zone (i.e., a place can have a "Hempstead, NY 11550" mailing address and not be in the Village of Hempstead): places that have a "Hempstead, NY 11550" mailing address that are not in the Village of Hempstead are in the Hamlet of East Garden City and the Hamlet of South Hempstead.

Houses are nice in Hempstead, although the village needs some more work on fixing its failing schools and cleaning up the area before it would be considered by most people.

Might be a good place to invest in if positive changes happen, but right now, I'd say the excessive village taxes and the failure of the village government to make anything good happen would keep most people out of it.

no, I'm not a real estate agent. I've been a hempstead resident for 10 years and I love it.

Just don't send your kids to school there. Sit outside any of the schools and watch what goes on- you can decide for yourself!

A 15 year old kid was stabbed to death on the handball courts a few weeks ago, right off Peninsula Blvd in broad daylight....ridiculous.

IMO, Hempstead is a good way to get your foot in the door if you're a first time homeowner and wouldn't have the option of living on LI otherwise. It's also got a lot of interesting architecture, great public transportation and it's loaded with history....but I'll be completely honest, as someone who is generally the only one "defending" some of these maligned areas on LI, you really gotta be accustomed to living the hood life in certain parts of Hempstead. It's not really a through and through ghetto, and the odds of something actually happening to you are slim, but if you're in the wrong place at the wrong time it can be dangerous. If anybody is relocating to the area from out of state and finds this thread, I'd advise you to really have a good look around first.

On the bright side, I think the recent murder of that 15 year old really resonated with a lot of people in and out of Hempstead. As a result of that and the drug busts on Terrace Ave the police patrol has been stepped up considerably, they've got officers on every corner downtown 24 hours a day. I think long term Hempstead will recover fully because it will probably become even more of a transit hub, has a walkable downtown and high density (and affordable) housing....question is, how long will it take? I think the Lighthouse development could be a huge boost, especially if they introduce some kind of light rail system to the complex.

Many years ago, before the malls were all enclosed , we kids would go to Hempstead on the bus to shop . There were cool stores ( to us anyway) that we did not have in Manhasset's Miracle Mile with its B. Altman's and Botwit Tellers . There were little shops with different kinds of clothes, John's Bargain Stores and Woolworth's with the restaurant counters and all. Naturally, our parents had no idea where we were.
