Yes. I personally don't mind paying through the nose for the best. We do not have that with this thing called tenure. My oldest child has been very lucky so far, and has had phenomenal teachers. That is not the case here for other kids. There are teachers that no parent wants to deal with, why do they still have a job in the district? It's a ridiculous thing to have to deal with, paying 13-15k a year in taxes.
Based on earlier teacher pay bashing threads, we have two more pages to go before someone brings up overpaid cops and the thread spirals so far off topic that a mod closes it.
The burned-out 5th grade teacher who takes every sick day and is counting the days to retirement is grossly overpaid.
The incredible high school science teacher who loves his job and is adored by his students, is grossly underpaid.
If these two teachers have the same number of years in the system, they are paid EXACTLY THE SAME.
Which is why unions suck, and tenure needs to be eliminated.
My son had the burned out teacher in 3rd grade. Parents referred to her as 'the lost year' which was so very true. Instead of this nonsense of state evaluations, how about the people paying the salaries have some say as to who should be cut? A system like that would have proven this teacher was biding her time. Homework came home unchecked, errors were made grading tests, the class was behind their peers. When 20 students (who performed well in 2nd grade) are all slipping, something is wrong.
I find it more astonishing that many think that the only place to get a good education is here on LI and pay these salaries/pensions. Do you really think that the rest of the country are a bunch of morons with no education? lol.
In all the other threads, the teachers always come on and claim that they work so many X other of hours outside the classroom. This new study debunks that idea. At the same time, I happened to drop in and notice that people were paying 13-15k in property taxes. That is not normal.
The study you refer to and linked but did not read has absolutely nothing to do with non-instructional time teachers claim or do not claim to work. And it debunks nothing relative to non-classroom time. Read before trolling?
Can't take this comical troll bait seriously.

Of course it does. The study states that American teachers are artificially inflating instructional time in the classroom. The teacher's union claims that all this time is made up outside of the classroom. Bogus. If they lie about one thing, who is to say they don't lie about the other, which is so more difficult to quantify.
Thank you all for posting, this thread is now closed!
You mean YOU don't want anymore talk on the subject. But the last time I looked, we were still a Democracy.
The costs of schools, which teacher's salaries and benefits are a major part of, are one of the main causes of our huge tax burden on Long Island. It is a major reason many seniors leave Long Island and why many young people cannot afford to live here.
The costs of schools is a major issue for Long Islanders.
