Last I looked a while back Shirley was not on the list. But Mastic was. Now Shirley was added to this list. Things will only get worse now for Shirley. Illegal Immigrants flock to all the towns/cities on this list in the US for a reason. No town/city on this list is good anymore due to this policy. They know they are safe here. Illegals destroy every town that has been granted this policy. Sanctuary Cities and States Protecting Illegal Aliens in the United States - New York

There's a few pockets of some really trashy areas in there, black, white and Hispanic, but there are also some neighborhoods that are just fine. The issues lie with being in such close proximity to the trash. They go into other neighborhoods to do their deeds. While you may lucky out and get a good neighborhood, you'll still be sharing the same stores and whatnot as the trash.

Go drive around the area and/or use Google streetview to explore. It'll give you an idea. Visit the 7th precinct and ask which areas you should look at. Basically ask them which neighborhood they're never in for calls.

Thats because they are.

Area is trash in and out. There's a reason why things are cheap there.

Don't be fooled by people saying its a matter of time before the area is gentrified. Its a poophole.

Obviously she's a snob, but that area gets its reputation for a reason.
Your acquaintance probably lives a very sheltered life. I looked at William Floyd Pkwy on Google maps and it looks pretty well-kept to me. How fancy does a busy two way main road need to be? It looks much nicer than any part of Merrick Road in Nassau and 100x nicer than Jamaica Ave. in Queens.

People need to get out more beyond their little bubble. I now live in a gentrifying area with plenty of rough spots, and none of them scare me. I've observed that most people with rough edges are basically decent.

That part of Suffolk will always be cheaper because the area lacks access to the city. It's kind of a r.e. dead zone: not the Hamptons nor accessible to NYC. The employment market in Suffolk has slackened and a lot of people living east of the 110 work in blue collar services.

If you need good schools I'd probably skip ShirlMastic, but with no kids in school it's probably fine.

If you come from the city you won't find it that bad at all. Most Long Islanders are anti diversity, and prefer boring neighborhoods with no character. They also like paying tons of taxes. This is the last place in the country where you can live by the beach, by farms, and by commuter rail to the largest city. With the affordability crisis, rising inflation, deeper debt levels, and greater tax burdens, it's only a matter of time you'll see a nice return on your investment. Local and state governments have just caught onto this, hence why the recent rise in their investment in public projects in the area.

I also prefer low crime, good schools, mowed lawns, cars parked on driveways rather than grass, and neighbors who respect their surroundings...both people and property.

Nice way to conveniently leave all the bad stuff off your list. I guess that's what give it "character".

I'm a Brookynite though. We don't need that ugly manicured stuff. Lol at good schools. They got you suckered into that suburban propaganda. This ain't 1990. I just got back from my kayaking trip to Fire Island. It's a beautiful country setting out here.
