What are you talking about "blaming" ? Whats that got to do with anything?

Custodial care (a place to sleep, clothes, food, warmth in winter) is not parenting. The state can provide custodial care - its not parenting, and people who think that's all they have to do to parent are missing it by a long shot. Parenting requires custodial care but goes way beyond it.

And don't you live adjacent to Sunrise Highway? I sure hope you don't see any kids playing outside!

Regardless, I'm not going to speculate on the family values of those around me since I'm not in their houses enough to comment - but my neighborhood is full of kids playing outdoors after school, riding bikes, etc. And when they're not out front they're in somebody's back yard on a swing set or trampoline. Yes many are on their ipads and iphones a bit too much - but that's nothing new. Kids have been wasting time playing video games or just watching tv for decades.

"Family dinner" sounds nice at all, but that ceases to be an every night affair the second your kids start playing youth sports. And that's not crazy travel leagues and club teams - that starts with basic little league, CYO, etc.
Yes to the bold comment but I am talking about the surrounding blocks and down the other end of my street away from Sunrise. There are kids on the block.

Bringing an IPad or any electronic device is not allowed. When we, his parents, and his younger sister are eating dinner, he is not going to be rude by watching videos and playing games. We take it away. Now, if it is just me and him and we are eating lunch, I don't mind as much, but not when we are all there and should be talking and spending time together as a family,

I do not believe in distribution of wealth. What I make should be mine and what you make should be yours. If I am unsuccessful or lazy or decided to party while everyone was in college, then I am not entitled to one cent of your money and wouldn't take it if I needed it. It's a matter of pride. People today have none. They graduate college and think they are entitled to make more than $40,000 starting salary. BS! They are entitled to nothing. No generation was and no one now is. I don't care how rich someone is. I know some very rich folks. They have millions and own multiple houses. They also worked very hard for their money and no ones business if they didn't. They would give me one red cent. They are the cheapest people I have ever met. They would steal a 5 cent screw from Home Depot. But, they owe nothing to anyone. If they have a ma Simon and someone is down the street starving and homeless, they have no obligation to help that person. I have no problem with that.

I have a child who loves his iPad and video games. He brings his iPad to the dinner table and I take it away. I would not allow that. I don't live in Leave It To Beaver but I understand the importance of a two parent (man and woman) is essential to a child's development. If it means I cannot do anything for myself, so be it. I walk the walk. I am not trying to replicate 1960s family time but I am teaching him core values.
Unbelievable! I see your point but man, we are doing very bad.

I respect your opinion. I really do, but I don't feel this way. Take my tax money so that we can all stop killing each other from ghettoness and poverty.

We are the new America. What was once back in the 50's or 60's is no longer. We are the new generation, and I'm sorry it's not as secure as you once felt it was. What we have is not working (Democrat or Republican). My family is very old school Cuban Republican and thinks JUST like you I don't agree. My sister is 20 and thinks even more socialism than me , and we are the future.

BUT to remain on topic, the family values we are talking about are still here. In my heart, I most definitely teach my daughter family is #1, we talk and look at each other, we are affectionate and speak I love yous, yes, there are ipads some days but there were other distractions we could have blamed in the 50's 60's 70's 80's. I didn't grow up with a family dinners and I love yous even without the internet. Those values are still in me and onto my family, however.

Thank God I will be pushing up daisies. I would never survive that future.

I am the same generation as you are and are as anti-socialism as they come, so is my millennial sister. Don't think that everyone of the same generation feels the same. Only thing we get out of socialism is everyone is equally poor. Nothing in this world is "free". Not healthcare, not college one way or another you will pay until "other people's money" all runs dry and the system collapses on itself.

I respect your opinion. We don't know that though. Look at Sweden for example. Why don't they collapse? They're wealthy as heck.

And we collapse several times recently, didn't we?

And we're killing each other more now than any other country.

I don't know - I'm in the middle. I see your point and I see their point but lean more towards giving the fresh idea a try.

Also - to add to family values.... this is the age of attachment parenting, so this is going to be huge for future emotional security. Guaranteed.

Back in the 70s-80's, Moms didn't believe in holding their babies as much, breastfeeding/bonding wasn't pushed like it is now, expressing your emotions and affection and DADS being equally involved wasn't being pushed like it is now. All of this will mold family values for the better. Even against the ipads and internet.

Same here, you certainly have a right to your beliefs. As for sweden they are a comparatively tiny country compared to ours (less then 10 million) and are taxed at higher rates across the board (not just the rich but everyone). And Sweden is far from utopia, they have their share of problems as well.

Wow, you are way off in your time frame and generations. That was the beginning of the bonding/laleche movement. Penelope Leach was a baby guru. Dads were already doing LaMaze and in the delivery rooms. Maybe, you meant early 70s, but even then, there was Dr. Spock. Also the role of fathers and mothers in childrearing is very cultural, more than generational.

Before the ipads, it was television and before television, it was comic books. This has been going on since we changed to an industrial vs. agricultural style of family life.
