Officially, no. But, unofficially, some people do use the name of their community when it differs from the community in their mailing address.

The USPS use of non-conforming ZIP Code postal zones leads to a situation where the majority of places in both Nassau and Suffolk County (as well as all of New York State and the U.S., as a whole) have a different community name in their mailing address than the community where that place is actually located.

Places in Roslyn Harbor have a "Roslyn, NY 11576", "Glenwood Landing, NY 11547", "Glen Head, NY 11545" and "Greenvale, NY 11548" mailing address.

Places in East Hills have a "Roslyn, NY 11576", "Roslyn Heights, NY 11577", "Greenvale, NY 11548" and "Old Westbury, NY 11568" mailing address.

Places in Brookville have a "Glen Head, NY 11545", "Greenvale, NY 11548" and "Jericho, NY 11753" mailing address.

The Town of North Hempstead includes 30 villages and 18 hamlets within its boundaries.

Thank you Walter!! You are so helpful! I think I get it now. Hopefully someone will have additional info regarding schools, demographics, etc.

So mailing addresses would never read "Roslyn Harbor, NY", "North Hempstead, NY", "East Hills, NY" or "Brookville, NY"? Wow, this keeps getting more & more confusing!

No, I grew up in Roslyn Harbor and we always used that as our address. Of course, some pretentious people spelled it Roslyn Harbour . There just is not a separate postal code. LLoyd Harbor is a definite village and does not have its own zip code either.
