But if you live in a bad school district, can't you just send to another one under NCLB? My fiance are looking into Nassau, and a lot of homes are in good areas but fall into bad school districts. For example: Massapequa falling into Amityville SD. Couldn't we just send to the Massapequa schools? If not, we'll just send it catholic school.

First, you must send your child/children to the school district to which you are paying property taxes, unless you are willing to pay non-resident tuition to a different school district in addition to paying your regular school district property taxes. Second, no part of the Hamlet of Massapequa is in the Amityville Union Free School District; but, a part of the Hamlet of East Massapequa that has a "Massapequa, NY 11758" mailing address is in the Amityville Union Free School District (other parts of the Hamlet of East Massapwqua that have either a "Massapequa, NY 11758" or a "Massapequa Park, NY 11762" mailing address are in the Massapequa Union Free School District). For those who may not be familiar with East Massapequa: East Massapequa is a hamlet (an unincorporated area) in the southeast part of the Town of Oyster Bay, in the southeast part of Nassau County, along the Oyster Bay/Babylon town line and the Nassau/Suffolk County line. Beginning on the north and moving in a clockwise direction, the Hamlet of East Massapequa in the Town of Oyster Bay is bordered on the north by the Hamlet of South Farmingdale; on the east by the Hamlet of North Amityville and the Village of Amityville in the Town of Babylon, Suffolk County (the Oyster Bay/Babylon town line and the Nassau/Suffolk County line); on the south by the Great South Bay; and, on the west by the Village of Massapequa Park. ![]() East Massapequa is one of those many villages and hamlets on Long Island where none of the places in the community have the hamlet name in their mailing address: places in the Hamlet of East Massapequa have a "Massapequa, NY 11758", "Massapequa Park, 11762" and "Amityville, NY 11701" mailing address. For those who may not be familiar with East Meadow: East Meadow is a hamlet (an unincorporated area) in the northeast section of the Town of Hempstead, in the central part of Nassau County, along the Hempstead/North Hempstead town line Beginning on the north and moving in a clockwise direction, the Hamlet of East Meadow in the Town of Hempstead is bordered on the north by the Village of Westbury in the Town of North Hempstead (the Hempstead/North Hempstead town line); on the east by the Hamlet of Salisbury and the Hamlet of Levittown; on the south by the Hamlet of North Bellmore and the Hamlet of North Merrick; and, on the west by the Hamlet of Uniondale and the Hamlet of East Garden City. ![]() The Hamlet of East Meadow has a different border than does the "East Meadow, NY 11554" ZIP Code postal zone (a place can be in the Hamlet of East Meadow and have other than an "East Meadow, NY 11554" mailing address): there are places in the Hamlet of East Meadow that have a "Westbury, NY 11590" mailing address. So let me get this straight, so I'm not confused anymore. Under NCLB we can send our children (well, my future children) to another school district, but we would have to pay tuition?

Second, many, but not all, school districts allow for non-residents to pay a per student tuition for sending their out-of-district children to this school district. But, it ain't cheap, and can cost 50% to 100% more than what the person is already paying in school district property taxes in the school district in which they reside, and this is per child and is in addition to the property tax they still have to pay in the school district in which they reside. |

Yes you can send you child to any district you want but you must pay the full cost of the child's cost which is in the $10,000-15,000 per year range. |

Then people might as well send their kids to private school. I looked up some catholic schools that are cheaper than that.
