DA: Suffolk cop in fatal Sunrise Hwy. crash had 10 pints of beer | Newsday

Part of the article:

He is now charged with aggravated vehicular homicide, several lesser homicide charges, second-degree reckless endangerment and aggravated driving while intoxicated. Scheuerer faces a maximum of 9 1⁄3 to 26 years in prison if convicted of all charges.
Assistant District Attorney Marc Lindemann said Scheuerer’s sport utility vehicle collided with a van driven by Brian J. Fusaro, 37, of Bay Shore. The van exploded and Fusaro, who was on his way to work, burned to death.
In part because of Scheuerer’s injuries, Lindemann said he was no flight risk. State Supreme Court Justice Fernando Camacho allowed Scheuerer to remain free on bail of $250,000 bond.

Before the arraignment, about two dozen police officers who showed up in support of Scheuerer briefly jostled news photographers and videographers outside the courthouse and in the hallway outside the courtroom.

As SIB said, I would be shocked and not surprised all at the same time...there's always been something weird about the "investigation" - can't be that hard to catch this guy in this day and age.
So your saying the cops beat up the media? Stop calling them photographers, they are members of the media. if the cops are beating up reporters and their camera men, at court, whos stopping it? Why werent they held in contempt or arrested for assault?

Is there some cop on here who can tell me why on earth any decent human being, other than a family member, showed up to defend this piece of garbage? It's not like there's some chance he was actually innocent. I mean, yes he may have been throwing himself in front of bullets for a year like the rest of you, but now he's crossed WAY over the line from superhero to perp.

Anyway, this mentality is EXACTLY why a person like Burke was able to reach the levels he did. Many, many cops on SCPD knew he was a piece of garbage. and any number should have gone over his head or to the Feds at some point in his career, but apparently few if any did......the blue wall of silence is actually DEADLY to civilians, it's a national security risk.

The rookie cop's father is a longtime member of the SCPD, something like 27 years. That's probably a big factor in their support. Also the rookie was out drinking with other cops before the crash. They are really closing ranks to defend one of their own who was doing what many of them were apparently doing by drinking and driving. Obviously the culture in the department under James Burke has not changed.

Lovely.

Oh, and didn't someone on here once say that nepotism doesn't get you on SCPD? That they don't weed out undesirables after the exam grades come in?

I think someone was lying, no? How did this moron get it? He was on 24. You don't think experienced guys from NYPD are lining up to take that spot?

Is there anything about SCPD that DOESN'T stink?

Applicant processing did a wonderful job of weeding out the most corrupt cop in the history of ny policing. NOT!

Looks like he got away with many sins and plenty of people covered up for him along the way.

How many burkes are still left that followed in his foot steps and learned his ways? Scarey this is what ran a police dept.
