I live in new hyde park area, and I would like to get a maintenance contract for my gas furnace and the hot water heater in my house. Does anyone have any recommendation on any provider that service nassau county? and what's a reasonable rate for the plan? Thanks
We have it with Universe, they are in Seaford, not sure if they cover NHP, but call them anyway, maybe they do, or maybe they know someone local. Very reasonable, we pay 313 for the year, and it covers a lot of things, we did have them change a few zone valves and that did not cost us a penny, they will send you an agreement as to what's covered. Keyspan also has these plans, but when we compared, Universe covered a lot more things.
I thought gas runs clean and doesn't need maintenance? Can anyone confirm??
While gas is cleaner than oil, it's hardly "maintenance free".
It's still a complex system for the combustion of fossil fuel, and needs to be cleaned and checked out. No, you don't have a oil filter to change or the heavy sooting you find with an oil system, but you still have burners that need to be cleaned, gas valves and ignitors to check, flues to brush.....
Last place I lived the gas system wasn't serviced for at least 10 years. In my current home it's been almost 3 years since we moved in and prior owner doesn't think it was ever serviced. Service contracts are just a waste of money. It's always cheaper to just call petro and pay for the non contract service. My AC unit broke last summer $600 to fix it. I asked about the contract repair guy laughed and said this wouldn't be covered under any plan.
Our gas burner was purchased in 2014, the year we purchased our house. This year, it wouldn't start. There was a pilot light but it wouldn't start up. I called universal and he wanted $400 to replace a $30 part. I think it was a nozzle or something. I did it but the guy was arrogant and told me if I didn't pay for the part, he would still get the $125 charge (though I was told it was $115 on the phone) and that someone else would come and I would have to pay another house call fee and the repair would cost the same.
So, a brand new Burnham unit needed a $400 repair after just two seasons of use. I will be going for a service plan but not with universe.
Off the top of my head for NG hot water boilers if the contract does not include labor and materials for the following it's not worth it: expansion tank, auto fill valve/back-flow preventer, circulator pump(s), zone valve(s), overflow valve, auto air vent, ignitor
In all my years in the trades, say what you want about oil, but I have found an oil fired system to be far more dependable than gas. Yeah gas burns cleaner and it's cheaper and all that stuff, but oil is bulletproof. Providing you do the yearly maintenance of course.
