Oh sure...the Land of Smiles has come to justifiably be regarded as one of the most dangerous tourist destinations on Earth.
Just ask Wendy Albano, the two backpackers, David Carradine etc...........
Or may be LI is just best place to live. The safest place on earth ? Freedom ?
So far i saw only tourist has been doing stupid thing when they travel. No respect for where they visiting.
I am in Dallas Texas right now and I thought NY drivers were nuts Dallas has all of NYS beat including cabs in NYC. Car insurance here is 3x that of NYS due to the accidents and the traffic is horrible at least NY/LI has side streets alternate routes. Here you pay for the toll way and sit in traffic or go non toll way and sit in more traffic. No side streets they have constructed their road ways to keep everyone mostly off the side streets and service lanes. So once on the highway your stuck.
I would love an in between small town atmosphere but you will have to make sacrifices on shopping and hospitals and quality of care from big cities. If relatively healthy no worries if not city life will be the best overall.
You're right about Dallas. My brother lives in Dallas and every time we cross the Dallas city limits I remark how I feel like I just crossed the border between Nassau and Queens on the LIE. It's nuts.
I left LI in 1993 to follow my wife to Michigan for grad school. Spent 5 years in Metro Detroit and I liked it a lot. Great people, some of whom I'm still friends with 20 years later. Reasonable cost of living but oh man the winters. It was fine in my 20s but I couldn't do it today. The Detroit suburbs are nicer than people give them credit for.
We returned to NY in 1998, this time to fulfill the dream of living in Manhattan. We had it made with a big apartment in the Village subsidized by our employer. However, we wanted to eventually start a family and we didn't want to do it in the city and I didn't want my wife to have to commute for the rest of her life so we got out again, this time for good.
Currently residing in Austin, TX and this is likely where I'll be buried. We like it here, it's not the utopia that the Austin hype machine makes it out to be (it has changed a great deal over the past 12 years) but it's a good place to live overall. It's expensive for Texas but still cheaper than the tri-state area. We bought my in-laws a house and moved them down here a few years back. My taxes have gone up about 1k since we've been here. I can say the food has gotten much better since 2005 lol. I haven't been back to the island since 2012, I need to get back for a visit soon. I have no remaining family in the area, just friends.
Thailand was definitely interesting to experience, from riding elephants, to the monkeys in the streets, rice fields, and all the temples/culture. But the horrid humidity, mediocre food, and "can't drink the water" (something else actually made me sick) - certainly not very positive for everyday living.
My favorite place to experience has been Vancouver, but 1) the expense and 2) the weather will make that a no-go.
