Even though I moved from LI, I would like to answer. When I lived on LI I would not move to:
Las Vegas (we already looked and it wasn't for us)
Colorado (don't like the weather)
NYC(like suburbs for raising a family)
Florida (too hot, not impressed with schools)
California (earthquakes, expensive)
These are the states I have spent some time in, and didn't like to live.
I hate the cold, so any other state that gets very cold would not make me happy. Anywhere else I would give a try if I had too and it made financial sense.

What was your impression of the Vegas suburbs? Just curious if you had completed any research on the schools, the sense of the community (was it too transient?), etc...
States not for me:
Florida - too hot
Texas - this is only based on a half dozen business trips, but I did not enjoy the Houston and/or Fort Worth areas that I visited. Limited exposure though.
AZ - see Florida (I stepped off the plane in July and my eyeballs were sweating)
Any place that I cannot enjoy the great outdoors year round. 5 months of winter really kills me!!
