The team played at Hofstra in an existing facility which was already paying taxes. Chances are they rented the field at Hofstra, so it isn't like they built a soccer stadium and are abandoning it. How many soccer fans actually frequented restaurants in Uniondale after a game? There is a grand total of 16 home games -- 8 spring season and 8 fall season. It's not like losing a baseball team which plays far more games and draws a large crowd.

The team was purchased by Rocco Commisso and will play at MCU Park along Coney Island’s iconic boardwalk.
The man has an estate in Saddle River, NJ and his business, Mediacom, is the 5th largest cable and communications provider in the US. It is based in NYC. Coney Island makes perfectly good sense -- close to work, home, and in an area which attracts a lot of tourists.
Commisso is trading a 55 year old stadium for a 16 year old in a better location. Who can blame him?
That was never my point. As I said it is the trend (symbolism) of high (or medium) profile, NATIONAL businesses leaving. The Cosmos wasn't the fault of LI pols but it is a victim of apathy and lack of will to make anything happen here. A new Coliseum and a 10k seat soccer stadium is not much to ask for in Kansas. On LI it should already be here.
How high profile could it be if a number of people didn't realize the Cosmos still existed?

The new owner is an intelligent, realistic guy and long time soccer icon, he doesn't expect it to make money. He expects it to be great for the community. Columbia Univ. or Coney Island. Those communites, not ours.
The owner lives in Saddle River, NJ. Why the heck would he want to schlep to Uniondale?
The Lighthouse project might have made things more enticing for the soccer fans. But would it have made Commisso keep the team in an ancient stadium in Uniondale?
League is up and running with six teams. Whether it's 3k, 5k, 1k or the league is in trouble (mostly mismanagement by 2 or 3 owners), what difference does it make? All proceeds to Kings County, zero proceeds to Nassau County. No one noticed the team, maybe they'll notice their taxes going up to offset the tax revenue loss. Again, so shortsighted. Besides, your loss if you never went. Lots of fun, especially for the kiddos.
They're moving from the 55 year old Hofstra owned Shuart stadium. Hofstra's footing the taxes, Cosmos were probably renting the field. Like a tenant moving from a rental house, it doesn't mean the landlord stops paying.

If Commisso had his choice, they'd be playing at Columbia in his stadium...yes, the stadium named after him! He's doing what is smartest for the franchise, league and community. Hofstra was an interim solution, so is MCU. He wants a stadium and will likely have the juice to get one done somewhere...not on Long island though, no one is THAT stupid! For the record, I don't think Hofstra pays dollar one in taxes. All public and most private universities are tax exempt.
4900+ people per game spend some money. Discounting what local restaurants think/experienced is rude and shortsighted. The Islanders and now Cosmos are a rough one two punch to lose for feeder businesses. If you think Borelli's, Chipotle and McD's aren't feeling it, that's just crazy...and they collect plenty of sales tax.

It's empty (as a revenue generating source for outside bars and restaurants) for a total of 16 days. There are many other sporting and sports related events held there.

And from what I was reading, the team is practicing at Commisso Stadium, not Hofstra.
If it eventually becomes a matter of him building a soccer stadium, my money is on NJ.

Huh? They don't even have a football team!! It's a football stadium.

That could well be, but Red Bulls will have a great deal to say about it and they are the #1 soccer dog in the area. Even without a team here, big presence on LI as they offer the trainings utilized by most youth leagues. Red Bulls are yuge! lol

As yuge as our taxes? lol
Hofstra even managed to lose the Jets summer training to Cortland; I believe Cortland lost them and they now train in NJ,.
