We were looking at Little Neck/Douglaston after hearing that the Queens SD 26 is the best in NYC.

The school may be good, but it still belongs to the NYC department of ed. the DOE is so corrupt. I'm a K teacher, so I know that no matter how good a school might be, the budgeting really can affect the school since they're all a part of the department of ed. Also, kids from bad areas get bussed into the better areas.

Schools may not get funding because they are good.I teach K in a "good" NYC school, and there are many things we lose because we don't get the funding. We don't, however, get kids from bad areas often, and when we do it's because their parents care enough to get them there and if that's the case, they are not bad KIDS...there's a difference...back to the OP...Sewanaka (sp?) is a mixed bag..went to school with some teachers there and one loved, another didn't so much...good luck in your search!

Herricks High School is also in New Hyde Park and it appears to rank well.

Thank you. Yes, I also looked at Herricks, unfortunately, the houses there are far from the LIRR, which I take to commute to work in the city.

How about schools in New Hyde Park-Garden City?

I saw and heard Garden City has great schools, but how about this New Hyde Park-Garden City thing?

We'd like to stay in the Northwest area of Nassau, but we cannot afford the expensive Great Neck/Manhasset.

On the flip side of great schools, such as the ones in Great Neck/Manhasset/Herricks. How are these kids in general?
From experience, I know many snobby kids with (very) rich parents in the neighborhood, thinking that if my kids do become friends with them. I'll be getting demands to buy them brand new BMWs when they're 16. I certainly cant afford that and more importantly, do not want my kids to have these kinds of peer pressures. Know what I mean- thoughts anyone?

Thanks everyone for their responses.

South Hempstead is a nice area, priced reasonably, lots of young families and the school district is Rockville Centre. You just have to be careful because some of the houses closer to Grand Ave. are Uniondale schools. I love living there, I love our neighbors, my daughter's school is excellent and the Principal in absolutely amazing. It is a nice small community and everyone looks out for each other. The only way I will leave is if my taxes push me out. I am concerned about the rich kids too, but if you keep your kids grounded, hopefully it won't be an issue! Good Luck!

Best bargain IMHO, Williston Park in Herricks district. The community feel of Williston Park helps to offset the snotty attitude coming from the schools.
