Hmmmm. South Merrick is a bit more prestigious but both are very nice.
The biggest difference is that although there are very nice homes and some very big McMansions in South Bellmore, there is also an eclectic mix of average homes and also some smaller less nice bungalow homes. Sometimes it's a bit odd because you will a very small rundown shack sized home next to a very average but well kept high ranch which is next to a massive brick McMansion lol
Generally speaking, in south Merrick the home situations are bit more consistent. Overall the homes tend to be super overtop Mcmansions or average homes. There are less below average homes in the mix...
Don't get me wrong though, they are both very nice areas except personally I think it is insane to buy in the flood zone unless you have water on your property. Many of those homes, specifically in Merrick can be found cheaper North of Sunrise highway. To me, it is a no brainer to buy North of Sunrise if you aren't going to have water on your property South of Sunrise.
Another difference is that South Bellmore is surrounded by Merrick and Wantagh which are two great towns. South Merrick is surrounded by Bellmore which is great but it is also surrounded by Freeport which is a bit more industrial in that area.
Also, a lot of people from East Meadow and Levittown use the Bellmore train station for a commute and a bit less tend to use the Merrick train station.
Both South Merrick and South Bellmore have large Jewish communities.
if you want to buy in those areas you really need to get yourself familiar with flood zones, flood insurance, elevation certificates, and everything else related to the realities of coastal living. Do your homework. And don't trust anything a realtor has to say about this stuff.
Some people immediately dismiss buying anything near the bay and with good reason, but in many cases if your street is high enough and/or your house is high enough, you can live in these areas relatively risk free.

And you need to brace yourself <trigger warning> for an ass-****ing because the taxes are massive in both places; and they will most likely go up hugely after close.
If you're concerned with schools, Bellmore public schools now offer a universal pre-k program, half day or full day.
