I'm leaving after my kids graduate high school, in about 14 years.

Interlude, see above quotes - young families are moving in for the schools and then realize it's not worth it afterward. This trend of constantly having people move here doesn't say anything about LI's value. Just the desirability to have good schools and safety in the suburbs for their kids and not necessarily anything more. I was once naive (growing up here) but over time (including what is being shared on this board) - you learn what's out there compared to here and why we're honestly being ripped off - and not just in value. The biggest problem with not being able to resolve this is it's not just 1 person or 1 group. They hide among us and vote too. S***w your fellow man by taking more for yourself is the way of NY.
People moving here may know this but don't realize the impact or can withstand the impact just long enough. After the kids are done and go away for college, there is little incentive to stay considering the costs that are double many other areas even if your house is paid off.

I see the same - our company has been outsourcing to India for well over a decade and more recently Brazil. They are paid 1/8 to 1/3 of US counterparts' salaries and customer satisfaction has taken a hit. Other issues include: rapid turnover (they don't stick around long and are replaced by others needing more training), language issues (some worse than others and it's not about accents), incompetence / lack of promised technical skills, and having to go over things more than once which drives your own productivity down. Yet since we're a public company, all the execs care about are the dollars saved so they can show our shareholders how awesome our bottom line is.
Retiring in ten years too. I could afford to stay, but I am opting for better weather.
Long Island weather sucks!
I'm sort of in the same boat. Once I retire, there's no way I'm spending another winter here. Only question is whether or not I keep my house up here so I can come back for the summers.

Is it worth the taxes, property upkeep, and utilities for 2-3 months a year?

when I say "summers".... I mean a typical snowbird schedule of 5-6 months (May or so through the fall) up in NY. And yes, to me it's worth it.
