Top for me is the taxes that need not be where they are.

If they actually used it to improve infrastructure and offerings to the public, that'd be another story... all we see is aging NY/LI with more money going out the door by the year to individuals instead. What do you expect the outlook to be when the majority gives but seldomly receives?

I'm going to reference NoVA again to contrast what they get in return (for lower taxes, no less).

Next time someone complains about the taxes, have them look in the mirror to see if they're part of the problem. That's gotta be the worst form of hypocrisy on the island.

I'm leaving within the next two years as well but it's not because of the taxes or the climate, I actually really love it here, but I can't stand driving anymore and am so fed up with it so i'm looking to move to a smaller city in the NW.

NoVA sure rivals Long Island for traffic though. It's mind boggling. That would be my favorite place to live because I love DC (or live in Maryland) but the traffic....yikes.

Older people are leaving and new people (often new immigrants) are moving in. This same cycle has been going on for decades, what with the boomers retiring and moving to warmer locations. The net population has been going up.

there has always been a migration of retirees from LI. I'm curious how much of the number mentioned in the article is young people looking for cheaper COL and how that compares to previous years/generations.
