I love that my 1000th post is concurring with a post like this. There's a group of us on here that love the Island, even in it's "terrible" current form. I am so happy to hear you love the island, especially coming from another place. It's nice to hear. Best of luck to you and your husband (may God bless all cops).

NYNewbie is on a distinguished road
Default Children's Museum

Check out the Children's Museum in Hempstead. It is terrific. You can get a season pass there, which defrays the cost of frequent visits.

DON'T go to the firefighters museum there. You aren't allowed to see it until you pay. When you do, you'll be shocked at how tiny it is.

There is a whaling museum in Cold Spring Harbor. This is also small, but it is cheaper. My son loved it, and they show movies.

I live in both places. I live most of the year in NJ, but I spend about 20 weekends, and 4-5 full weeks in Amagansett. I grew up going to the Jersey shore in the summers, but after meeting my wife 8 years ago, I started going out to Amagansett. People that have never been there just dont understand how absolutely beautiful the area is. They cant understand why I drive 2.5-3 hours when I could just drive an hour or two away. They only finally understand once they come out to visit me.

I just have to say that your post is making me tear up.
I just moved from LI this past year to.... don't make me say it.... Florida!
I had no choice. My husband got transferred with his job.
Having been here for 8 months, I can honestly say that there is no place like Long Island. I can say that I am sad that my children will not get a chance to grow up in such a great place like I was able to.

Take advantage of what you have - you never know when you may be forced to leave.

You can bring blankets, pillows, etc. 6$ per person and well worth it. Kids hopefully fall asleep on the ride home. As a sidenote Centerport is beautiful...
Time a trip to the Vanderbilt right and hit The Shack for some tasty food.

Amagansett is beautiful. I haven't had the opportunity to spend much time there, but I enjoyed it when I did.

I've been out there a few times, but far from a regular. I know what most people say, but I'd love to hear your reasons for saying it is so beautiful. Thanks.

Well, the Jersey shore is basically just flat beaches with sand and ocean, and houses practically on top of one another. In Amagansett, there are hilly dunes with dune grass and lots of interesting plant life. You see deer hopping around in the dunes and rabbits, turtles, and thousands of little miniature frogs hopping around. Also, the houses are much more architecturally pleasing and spread much farther apart. I mean, Anyone who has been to LBI will tell you that the houses have about 5 feet of space in between them.

Also, he towns are very different. They are upscale, but quaint at the same time. While the hamlets are beach towns, they also have a lot of farms and horses and have a real country feel to them as opposed to the "spring break" beach town atmosphere you find in many beach areas.

Wait... A picture is worth a thousand words...
