Default What makes Great Neck so expensive?

I've been looking around for apartments in the area, and I've noticed that Great Neck's prices seem to be near Manhatten prices. ~$2000 for a 1 bedroom. Great Neck is a good place, but honestly I don't feel the prices are worth it. Bayside is not too far from Great Neck, and it seems to be still reasonable (as far as rent goes). For a few hundred dollars more, I could rent an entire home in the surrounding area. Does Great Neck have a larger variety of conveniences? I've also been checking out the Garden City area, but it seems to be close to Hempstead (bad). Westbury seems to be OK towards Carle Place. Douglaston is also an option for me. I could choose Great Neck, but I'd probably be living in a much smaller apartment than I could get elsewhere for the same price. What would you choose?

Either GN or GC...two great areas, both very different. Depends on what you are looking for.

Don't worry about GC being near Hempstead. They have their own wonderful police, and Hempstead pretty much never poses a problem. Very safe area, very desirable.

Bayside, GN, GC...I would chose one of these, they all are great.

Definately Garden city. The apartments in the 7th st. area are adorable and has that hometown sort of feeling. Great Neck is a much larger village and imo has some pretty shady areas itself.

Garden City has that beautiful old-worldly architecture, though. It's very different fom most of Long Island's prefab and development-style homes.

....Let see how I can put this

As the many aging Jewish folk there retire or flee to Florida. Mid Easterners from North Shore LIJ hospital have been taking their place getting housing, education grants (they have BIG $$$) to create there own "Society" in GN.
Many run or own the real Estate companys there now.

This recently new and expanding "group" however does not get along with there american born "relitives and brothers" and has raped just about every available property they can buy. …(Look up Persian Palace)

This big $$$ Hospital/Real Estate rigging is happening in New Hyde Park as well. All these these Doctors and Techs are sending prices sky rocketing and steering the good stuff for themselves or the ultra rich

This location is not so great unless you’re a shopahaulic, Jewish or hate to cook. Stay away from ANYTHNG near North Shore LIJ University Hospital !!!
