New Hyde Park-Garden City
Hello,
We are thinking of buying a house in the NHP area.
From previous threads, it seems the area with Elmont SD is not desirable. How about this New Hyde Park-Garden City?
How's the quality of the elementary/middle school and which high school does this neighborhood belongs to?
Any suggestions are welcome. Thanks.

It refers to the Garden City Park area. It is NOT comparable to Garden City, and has absolutely nothing to do with Garden City. It is considered better than Elmont school district as a whole, but the Manor elementary school in Elmont (which is what your kids would attend living in NHP, but being in Elmont district) is okay.
High school is either Sewanhaka or New Hyde Park Memorial, both being part of the Sewanhaka Central School District.
Look close at the area around the train tracks on Covert Avenue. Make sure it is to your liking. Also due to the fact that a 3rd rail road line might be put in the area, make sure the home is at least 1 block away from the tracks.

Village of New Hyde Park and the "New Hyde Park, NY 11040" ZIP Code postal zone have much different borders
Bear in mind, the Village of New Hyde Park and the "New Hyde Park, NY 11040" ZIP Code postal zone have much different borders:
.................................................. .acres
........Village of New Hyde Park.............531
..............of which
..............part in North Hempstead........292
..............part in Hempstead.................239
........"New Hyde Park, NY 11040"......3,339
.............of which
.............part in North Hempstead......3,098
.............part in Hempstead..................241
Thus, about 8 out of every 10 places with a "New Hyde Park, NY 11040" mailing address are NOT in the Village of New Hyde Park.
Quickly eyeballing the map overlay of the "11040" ZIP Code postal zone versus village and hamlet borders, all or parts of the following 8 communities seem to be within the borders of the "New Hyde Park, NY 11040" postal zone and hence places in these communities have a "New Hyde Park, NY 11040" mailing address:
....Village of Lake Success, Town of North Hempstead
....Hamlet of Manhasset, Town of North Hempstead
....Village of North Hills, Town of North Hempstead
....Hamlet of Manhasset Hills, Town of North Hempstead
....Hamlet of North New Hyde Park, Town of North Hempstead
....Hamlet of Herricks, Town of North Hempstead
....Hamlet of Garden City Park, Town of North Hempstead
....Village of New Hyde Park, Town of North Hempstead & Town of Hempstead

The school districts in this area are set up kind of strange in that the elementary schools have their own "districts" and then feed into the Sewanhaka Central HS District after 6th grade, which has 5 high schools in it. Kids from NHP-GCP would only be going to either Sewanhaka HS or NHP Memorial (as mentioned above). NHP-GCP covers most of or all of Garden City Park, New Hyde Park and North New Hyde Park.....Elmont HS is in the same district but only draws from the southern part of New Hyde Park, Elmont and Stewart Manor. Confusing enough?
I don't know a ton about these schools personally. I believe New Hyde Park Memorial is considered the better of the two high schools, although Sewanhaka HS was good enough for Vinnie Testaverde so it's got that going for it
