Hamptons
What's the fastest way from New York City?
I'm planning to go Labor Day (I know..its far off).
How long do you think it'll take to get there?
Should I start making reservations now?
I've never been. I need as much info as possible.

Hehehe. Good answer.
Depends on the day and the time of day. On a friday traffic gets bad around 2pm and lightens up quite a bit around 7pm.
In general, the LIE is the quickest way out, but if traffic is bad, you can try cutting over to the Southern State.
I would make reservations for labor day as early as possible.

I might suggest you head out on Thursday if it is at all possible. Make reservations as soon as you can.
If you aren't as rich as the private plane, helicopter group, the LIRR might be a consideration or Hampton Jitney.

In the summer, the LIRR runs their "Cannonball" service on Fridays out of the Hunterspoint Ave station and doesn't stop until it reaches Westhampton. Not sure exactly how long it takes, but their advertising claims "we'll get you there by happy hour!" In any case way faster than driving and much cheaper than air travel!

I don't know the train system that well, but we have had people come out on the train before, and I know there is a "cannonball" train that leaves out of Jamaica Queens. I dont know whether that is the Hunterspoint Ave station, but I do know that the cannonball is supposed to be much better because the regular train is constantly stopping. It only leaves at 1 time, in the late afternoon, so if you miss it, you are stuck taking the regular train.
BTW, if you want the true Hamptons experience, stay in a town east of the Shinnecock canal. Southampton, Bridgehampton, East Hampton Water Mill, Amagansett, etc.

For a first timer in the hamptons with only a one day visit, can someone suggest a few places to definitely see? What's the best beach to go to? Thanks!

As per "Dr. Beach:" #3 and #7. Now, you have to check to see if they are for residents, etc.
1. Ocracoke Lifeguarded Beach, Outer Banks, North Carolina - National Winner
2. Caladesi Island State Park, Dunedin/Clearwater, Florida
3. Coopers Beach, Southampton, New York
4. Hanalei Bay, Kauai, Hawaii
5. Coast Guard Beach, Cape Cod, Massachusetts
6. Hamoa Beach, Maui, Hawaii
7. Main Beach, East Hampton, New York
8. Coronado Beach, San Diego, California
9. Lighthouse Point Park, Daytona Beach, Florida
10. Siesta Beach, Sarasota, Florida

I would at least go to Southampton and East Hampton towns. This is where the shops and restaurants are. Also, Wolffer Estate winery is fantastic. Sag Harbor (if you come from the Hamptons north to Wolffer and continue on) is also quite beautiful. Parrish Art museum is nice, too.

Yes, East Hampton Main beach is great, as is Wolffer Estates. As for towns, I prefer East Hampton, myself. It's a little more quaint, although has been getting much more commercial in recent years. I like riding my bike around the area by Main Beach as well as Georgica. Kayak trips on Georgica pond are always fun too. If you have the time, a trip out to Montauk for a lobster at Gosman's is fun. My kids love watching the boats go by while we eat. I also like eating steak at The Palm, in East Hampton and Bobby Van's in Bridgehampton.
