"Our biggest concer was as soon as we moved here, almost on a weekly basis, we started receiving notices re the sexual offenders moving nearby"
We have been researching the area as well, and have sppoken to a long time teacher in the district, as well as people who have lived there in the past 5 years, and those who own homes there now-- all of them mentioned this disturbing fact- We said NO THANKs, not taking a chance with our children!!

I don't believe anyone has stated one area is free from crime; however there is a greater frequency and variety of crimes committed in the areas this thread is about as opposed to your example, Smithtown.
If you open the paper and read about something with drugs, sexual predators, rape, robbery, assaults, deadly weapons, mothers whose children wander off, drug-addled parents, etc., etc., ad infinitum, how often do you read (for example only) Smithtown as opposed to Mastic, Mastic Beach or Shirley?
Lower income areas tend to have more crime; that's not bias but fact.

I Dont Get It
I do NOT understand the horrific development in Mastic Beach.
I just don't get it. How can one area make so many mistakes? From the Handy DANDY deli to the LOST TREASURES AND COLLECTIBLES...to NEIGHBORHOOD ROAD.
How can a place that COULD be so nice simply have SO MUCH wrong. Please undersstand...I love the area, but some one really has their heads up their behinds when it comes to development.
KNOCK DOWN THE NASTY STORES...BUILD SOME REAL STORES...
PLAN
DEVELOP
ETC...
I DON'T GET IT ANYMORE...WHO DO I TALK TO? How do we affect change???

Change
If people were smart they too would be buying up beach houses for 150,000 and stop complaining. I seen it happen in Williamsburg Brooklyn and who is laughing now. It went from desolate crime ridden streets to the most sought after real estate in NYC. Mastic, Shirley is the only place with this potential in much of this country and I see the rumblings of change occurring with the city folk buying cheap weekend escapes. I know 4 different couples, looking in and around the Tri-Hamlet for beach houses hailing from Williamsburg/Greenpoint.
If I know 4 there are plenty more out there. The section 8 will be pushed out when the houses are owner occupied. Be part of the change rather than running from Newsdays constant Mastic bashing and Brookhavens constant dumping.

I am also curious about the Mastic/Shirley area- my friend just moved out there with her husband and children and the 2 children will attend Hobart Elementary in the William Floyd School District-- she has asked me about this school, but I have never even been to the area- she visited the school and told me it seems very nice....

I know people out there too. They are somewhat happy with the schools. Not thrilled but dont hate it none the less. They moved there because that was the only place they could afford to be a home owner. I guess you have to make a decision on whats more important. You will find that alot of people bashing the area could not even find it on a map rather have spent any time there. Like I said its not Southhampton nor is it East NY. They have a great fooball team though!
