The biggest problem with these schools is the administrative greed (and I am referring to LI schools in general). This particular school district was competely raped by some administrative members who lied, cheated, and stole from the students and parents paying tax dollars. Not that this is the only SD with such issues, but it was particularly sad to see such a working-class neighborhood be robbed of its much needed school funds.

Can you post statistics or a link to verify your statement?

Yes I heard/read about some school corruption. However, I would not blame the DISTRICT for that. Additionally, I checked test scores and any info I could find about the schools and they do not seem that bad AT ALL to me.

True, it's a combination of things -- greedy people working for the district, the residents of the district who vote the board in, lack of oversight by the board, and residents who sit back on their hands thinking others will correct things for them.
Poor combination

I get sent by my company to their Mastic building often. I drive here on shiftwork. 4 to midnite. midnite to 8AM. Day work. I do feel safe in the area. Nice people. The 2 times I saw police outside the building were (1) they were arresting a cop gone bad & (2) they were searching for a weapon used in a crime.

I don't know what you mean by saying not to blame that district for that. It was district employees that were corrupt, and district employees that defended these corrupt individuals. I was saying how particularly outrageous it was for administrative staff to commit such crimes against a community that is mainly comprised of hard-working, blue collar taxpayers. I think stealing from children (which in essence is what happened--someone has to pay for what was stolen) is lowest of the low. I was not addressing performance scores. But I do not think that a district that is constantly being put on the defense needed this sort of scandal as well.

Don't listen to the rumors
I bought my first house in the Shirley beach area a year and a half ago. I am a half a block from the bay and three blocks from Smith Point Ocean!! My husband and I make a nice salary, and got alot for our money. Because of the rumors, we were skeptical at first, but have been pleasantly surprised. Sure, there are some little old beach cottages that go for 200k, but, I could not find anything I would raise my two children in for under 300k. My taxes are still almost 8,000 a year!! We have a beautiful home, and have met some of the most down to earth people and made some really good friends already. I would not let the reputation turn you away. Alot of people on long island have this idea in their heads of one particular area, and it never changes. I have been guilty of that myself!!

I am from Brooklyn.
I searched for a home for two years because I wanted to find the right place for my children who were running a little wild in Brooklyn. I ended up searching in Mastic ( not mastic beach to inland for me) by mistake however I have been here a year and never regreted it. My children are better behaved and are getting a good education. I live in Mastic heading towards the Moriches area. I live close the the South Port Strip mall. My home is on a dead end streat each home owner cares for their home. Before I bought this home I came to Mastic in the night, in the day, on weekends and weekdays to see how the enviorment was and right before the closing there was a big storm with areas on long Island that were flooded, I did not go to work that day because I wanted to see if my future home was under water, it was not and I was very happy. My location is were many new homes have been built, my real estate agent stated mastic was famous for DSS clients ( do not jugde a person because of this), however everything is changing and if you come to my area you will see how nice it really is. The new houses are bought by people who care for their homes, are clean and quiet, those who rent dont care as much because it is not theirs. I would never place my children in jepordy and it took a lot out of me to move away from my family, however now that I am here I wish I would have done it sooner. My youngest child attends moriches elementary, it is a wonderful school she will be playing the viola next year, she plays baseball and is looking to sign herself up in a swimming team. Many people at my current job in Brentwood squirm when I say Mastic, then I ask them when was the last time you visitied Mastic, most of them said never, this is why people are getting the wrong impression, come and visit Mastic and you will see its not bad as people are saying. As a person who came from the city I would take Mastic over Brooklyn (and I love Brooklyn) any day. My sister is going into closing next week she will live in a new home one block from me. I would recomend Mastic, stay close to the stores and transportion, im not to far from Mastic shirley train station to make it easier for your visitors. I chose Mastic over Mastic beach, I think Mastic Beach still has a little more time before it is better. I have not heard any gun shots since I moved here, in the city I heard them everyday. The william Floyd High School is great and if you stay close to the side were the strip mall is (before the train tracks) the kids get to go to the Moriches Elementary School which is great (check out the William Floyd School District website it shows you a map on areas were you live and what school your kids get to to too). My husband loves it so much he travels everyday to Brooklyn to go to work and does not regret it one bit (he works for the NYC Dept of Sanitation), I got a job on the island to stay closer to the kids. So my advice ride around the neighborhood to find the right place, buy a new home especially now with the prices are at an all time low you wont regret it.
