SHIRLEYMOM is on a distinguished road
My husband and I bought a 3BR/2BA house in the "Wood" section of Shirley 5 years ago. We had initially bought as an investment while trying to figure out where to move outside of NY. Needless to say we are not going anywhere right now. It has turned out to be a great palce to live. We have a nice home, nice neighbors and I have to say that the elementary schools are very good. My son will be entering the 2nd grade at Hobart and we think it is wonderful. The key is to be an involved parent! The teachers are excellent as well as is the administrators. I have to be honest, there is diversity. There are lower-middle class families who do not seem to care about their community, but for everyone of them there are 5 families that are middle class hard working families that are trying to make their community a good one. Things have come so far in the past few year in Shirley, Crime is down, new businesses are coming in to town. We feel safe walking down our street. Lot's of professionals are moving in to the area, 2 RN'S and a SC cop on my block alone. I can't speak for Mastic or MB but we are happy we took a chance on Shirley!

masticgirl is on a distinguished road
That is right I lived in Williamsburg for 15 years and my mom has been there for 19 in the same apartment, I felt safe years ago but the enviorment keeps changing for the better. I believe Mastic is a great place to live and when people put their part it will even be greater. I love Mastic, I have not encountered any problems ever since I bought my home 1 year ago. Maybe before I moved here there was some problems I really do not know but I can say I have no problems living here. The only problem there is is the throwing of garbage, for some reason some people like to throw garbage in the surrounding areas of the streets, but I think with some education and stiffer fines the dumping problem will go away, hey look at Brooklyn many years ago garbage was everywere now it is clean and if you throw garbage on the sidewalk people will look at you wrong. Mastic, Mastic beach and Shirley all are in the perfect area, near the beach were people like to vacation. If I had the money I would certainly invest in many homes and fix them, make them all new I think this would be a wonderful place to live a perfect town to become great.

My wife and I are looking at a house in Mastic beach, despite all the horror stories that I've heard from co workers... We live in northport now and are both from huntington. The area that we are looking in didnt look any worse or better than either of the towns we have lived in so far....

Shirley/Longwood Schools would be your best bet.

We dont have kids yet so the schools are not my primary concern. I have heard some very conflicting views and stories about the William floyd school district, some good and some bad. I am more interested in the difference between the towns themselves at this point. Huntington has a bad rap because there are some very bad parts of Huntington station and I have witnessed this with my own eyes ( 12 year old boy riding a bike down the street with a pistol in his back pocket) less than 4 miles away is Huntington Village, where homeowners wear that location like a badge on there chests...and even further north is Huntington Bay where I spent about 6 years of my life. Living in all 3 areas I can say that I could walk through the streets of huntington bay at night and not worry, I could walk through the streets of huntington village at night and not worry, but huntington station...depends on what block you are on.
Northport is not the same way....I have been here for almost 15 years and have never seen a bad part of Northport. Never would I think twice about walking down any street in northport or east northport at any time day or night. It would seem that Mastic or Mastic Beach is more like Huntington but without the Village.
Of course I have only spent a couple of days there on a couple of occaisions, nothing even remotely bad looking that I saw.

Of course the main difference between Huntington and Mastic would be that the housing is less than half in Mastic.

Well also the fact that there is no downtown. Mastic Beach has Neighborhood Road but I hate going to Barbaras Kitchen because of the lowlifes hanging outside. They seem to own the next door stationary store but just smoke pot on the sidewalk everytime I walk by. (We're not talking kids here.)
Downtown Shirley would be the Kohls shopping center? What would downtown Mastic be?

You did say it first! LOL!
No downtown. No nice restaurants. No cute little stores like Huntington. But the new Ralphs is doing fabulous business. When I drive past to get to one of my companys buildings the place is packed. & I guess the Applebees will open eventually. I wish a Sports Authority & a few other stores would open up. There is no where to go shopping during lunch except Kohls.

It would be nice to have some better stores out there, I'm sure they will come as more and more homeowners buy the houses out there and all the cheap rentals go away. the house that I'm buying was a rental that some slum lord split in two and was renting illegally. Now its going to be a beautiful single family home when I'm done fixing it up. I'm sure the neigbors will be happy
