The first house linked above in the Three Village Club is a fantastic home. I know personally the folks who live there, and have been to the home numerous times over the past 8 years. The house is flawless and the owner was on site every day the house was being built to make sure everything was done to their satisfaction.

The owner of the home across the street is a famous musician from the 80s...I'll give you a hint: "We're not gonna take it" =).

Great neighborhood! You'd love this home. I'd buy it if I could afford it.

Looking at said musician's home, one would never know someone in his line of music lived there, except for Halloween when they decorate it.

Default I am paying the double...

And Smithtown has nothing more to offer then Hauppauge (my husband grew up in Smithtown). You have to remember that the industrial park pays most of our school taxes.
As somebody who is paying the higher taxes I do agree with your post. It does often get overlooked and is a location we looked at very hard. I am not a huge fan of the parts of Hauppauge surrounding the LIE and just south, but it is a very nice area with good schools. I do prefer the Town of Smithtown parks/beaches given I have little ones right now (calmer north shore), but will start to pine for more access to the south shore beaches of Islip as they get older. The great thing about Hauppauge is its convenience to all parkways and highways.

Another option would be to look into Poquott.
Drove past these the other day. Of course I couldn't get it b/c it was gated. But I didn't care for the location.

The 3V Club is either a hit or a miss, depending on the person's viewpoint and desired amenities.

For someone who needs to commute via car, the 3VC location is great. I understand you're not caring for the location; I'm a N of 25A type myself. The houses up on the northwest portion or in the center portion are best situated (in other words, I believe the one for sale by the 'rock star' is in a decent spot.) While a person can't just drive around in there, an alternative would be to park over on Daremy Lane (off of Pond) and walk around the back gate at the NW section.

Daremy, Scholar Pl, Graduate Ct, Dorm Ct, Poet Ln (between Graduate and heading south to Fieldhouse) Fieldhouse (from Poet to Varsity), Diploma & Homecoming are lovely streets.

I grew up on Strong's Neck so long ago that there were only about ten families there & one of them was the Strongs themselves. I have not been back in years (it's too painful to even see my old home) , but I would guess that it has been built up. It was a wonderful place to live, though.

It has been built up in the name of 'progress' *coughs up hairball*

Some of the old homes remain, as does a Strong or two.

Default East Setauket Greenway Trail

FYI: If you are looking in East Setauket for a place to bike ride, phase 1 of a 3.3 mile greenway (biking/hiking) trail is currently being constructed adjacent to Island Estates off Gnarled Hollow Road.
Here are some links to maps you can use to look in the area:

Three Village Community Trust (http://www.threevillagecommunitytrust.org/freindsofthegreenway.htm - broken link)

Civic Association of the Setaukets

The TVCT has some wonderful projects in the works and up their sleeves. It's a fabulous community and preservation oriented group. All of their volunteers deserve a big thank you.

An alternate location for families wishing to bicycle safely in Stony Brook has been SUNY Stony Brook. They had revamped all their bike paths a couple of years ago.

Hauppauge is long and runs from exits 55-58. You need to watch the township though. If it's township of Islip the taxes are low, but if it's township of Smithtown the taxes could double.
