OK, Wyandanch schools... honest opinions please !
More specifically. Elementary schools.
As far as teaching there. Is that THAT bad ?
Guys, how would you feel if your wife/sister/friend wanted to work there ?
I really hate how certain areas are labeled as so terrible. Is it that bad that I cant drive to work ? or is it bearable, if I mind my business, and help out the children, and go about my day ?
someone shed some light on the differences between Brentwood and Wyandanch. and also South Huntington.
I ask about these areas because Im bilingual, and would love to use that as an asset to help children (and parents) that can benefit from my speaking their language. and not get so caught up in getting a job in the impossible to get-into areas..
Ive heard that B is not that bad, yet W is VERY bad....
help !

If you are looking for a bilingual place to work - that would be Brentwood. Wyndanche isn't really bilingual - mostly english speaking. The population there is most - if not all african american.

Both South Huntington (SD 13) and Huntington (SD 3) have sizable bi-lingual student populations. Although in SD 3 there has been some controversy over attempts bi-linqual teaching.

You would not be in danger working there at all.

I don't think there's any danger in being a teacher in any of the schools you mentioned. You mentioned that you're bilingual.... do you speak English/Spanish or English/Creole or something else. There are a lot of Haitians in Wyandanch, so if you speak Creole, you would be doing a service. If you speak Spanish, you would probably better serve the Brentwood schools.
Wyandanch is a crappy district whose students perform VERY poorly. I don't think any teachers or staff are in danger being there, but I wouldn't want my sister/mother/friend working there.

Teachers don't care in wyandanch
Hey omigawd,
Where you ever a student at Wyandanch? I was and when i was there it was a great district there were a lot of smart kids with plenty of talent which was taught by teachers who care. Now they use the district as a stepping stone for these young white teachers to come stay a year then move on. I hope the parents catch on to the game

It is not the ideal school district. You can look up the school report card on Newsday, their scores on test are very low as is the graduation rate. I don't think teaching there is dangerous, but it is among the lowest of the LI school districts. Also, I'm not sure if they would utilize your bilingual degree, as most of the students are American born Black who speak English, not Hispanic. You could do worse in certain areas of Queens. As long as you are realistic about what you are getting into, it should be fine

OTOH, you could do better in many areas of Brooklyn and Queens. Financially, too.
