Hi there,
I was wondering if I could get the opinion from others on how the long island job market is doing? I live in Suffolk county in the brookhaven area. To me it seems like slim pickings. Lots of low wage menial jobs. Been thinking of moving out of state for better opportunities. My question is where are the jobs here in at least Suffolk county? Am I the only one who thinks this? Or are people leaving long island to find better opportunities and where are they going? Thanks...
Tons of work out there.
Nothing wrong with getting your hands dirty.
Menial labor makes the world go round.
Useless uppity rich folk would be helpless without it.
There's a growing AirBnB economy, which creates demand for ancillary services like home cleaning, repairs and improvement, delivery. There is also a revival in oyster farming, which used to employ up to 6,000 people.
Out of curiosity, if the only jobs available are low wage and menial, where are people getting money to spend on night outs in Patchogue, Beach Hut, Farmingdale? Why did Shake Shack open new branches in Melville and Smith Haven, and why is Tilted Kilt opening a new branch in Farmingdale? Where is the discretionary income coming from?

How do people with all of these "low level" jobs afford to live on Long Island? That is proof that people can live on Long Island for less than what most posters on this board say, even if it would not be a quality of life acceptable to most. Or am I missing something?
