I live in Hauppauge and many months ago I received a questionnaire to fill out for Brooklyn Federal Court Jury Duty.
At that time I called the Islip Federal Court and asked about getting Jury Duty relocated to Islip.
The clerk advised to fill out the questionnaire and wait until I actually get a Jury Duty Summons and that it actually might indicate to report to Islip.

Well, today I received the summons for Telephone Standby for Brooklyn.

I did some research online and the travel options to Brooklyn Federal Court at Cadman Plaza East are a terrible hardship. It would take at least 2 hours by train from my home at a cost of $44 r/t each day. That's $220 a week!

Its nearly impossible by car as there is no parking except for nearby pay lots at $33 per day....if its available.
At rush hour, this drive would take more the 2 hours. I recently drove from Bklyn to Hauppauge at around 430pm and it took over 3 hours to get home.
The court pamphlet that came with the summons even indicated that pay parking is limited and may not be available.

The summons states to fill out the questionnaire on the bottom of the summons and mail it 5 days.

Would they relocate me to Islip Federal Courthouse if I asked based on a travel hardship? Is this something they would easily do? Can I call?

I'm also confused, because it states that if I request a "postponement" to include a "copy" of the summons....
They don't want the "original" I don't get it. I just want to relocate to Islip, not a postponement.

Anyone with experience or knowledge that can advise me? Thanks so much for your help!!!

They will not move it. Since EDNY has two courthouses, City and LI, each courthouse pools from the entire district to ensure consistent juries.

What you can do is go the first day and explain the extreme hardship and hope they excuse you, which they probably will. If you go for a day or two and then are excused, it counts as your federal jury duty service. I would do that instead of postponing it. Also you are typically excused if you have already paid for a vacation during the time it is anticipated the trial will take.

Good Luck!

I got summoned there also I am in Nassau. The court will cover your expenses , you don't have to do anything it is calculated based on your address using lirr and subway. They don't care if you live near ci as we are the same district. When i went there was a guy there from greenport. I went one day and was never asked to go back.

I work in this area. Do not drive I repeat do not drive, it takes me 90 min leaving at 7am happauge is a solid 40 min from me in the am. The train is faster I drive 1-2x a year and it's brutal.

Thanks for your information. Anyways....The summons says its Telephone Standby. So, I guess I have to call the number they provided on the summons first to determine if I'm required to appear.
Did you have that too? Appreciate any detailed information you can give me. Thank you !

Thank you. The Summons indicates Telephone Standby so I will have to call the Friday evening before to see if I am required to appear. I'm praying I don't get chosen. The $225 per week I would have to lay out in advance prior to reimbursement for the train is almost unaffordable for me.
