We are a family of 5 currently living in Queens and thinking of buying a house in Nassau county. Our requirements are: ~$700k house with good school district and a reasonable commute to midtown.
What are some neighborhoods that have homes with more character and charm that would meet these requirements? It seems like the places that are commonly mentioned here such as Plainview, Syosset, etc. are all split levels/ranches/etc.
Plenty of options for you in that price point. $700k can get you into most neighborhoods, but WHAT you'll get will vary immensely. In some areas, $700k will buy you a shack. In others, $700k will buy a great home.
If you want character and charm, I'd say Port Washington, but $700k is a light budget to get a home there. It's doable, but it won't be a great house.
700K won't get you much in Nassau county and if it does, it won't have much character (smaller homes such as English tudors or capes often have character but not enough space for your family).
1. Rockville Centre-very low inventory there, for example, these few listings: http://www.mlsli.com/homes-for-sale/...1570-217000877 http://www.mlsli.com/homes-for-sale/...1570-205863915 http://www.mlsli.com/homes-for-sale/...1570-211105141
There were a few more listings in your price range, but I picked the ones that I thought had "character".
2. Certain parts of Lynbrook have nice homes, just make sure to check school zoning that it's Lynbrook school district rather than East Rockaway or Malverne. Hewlett-Woodmere district is also great.
3. North Valley Stream or Malverne zoned for Valley Stream North SD.
4. Floral Park and Franklin Square-check the zoning again because some parts of Franklin Square are zoned for the Elmont SD.
5. You could probably get a smaller or "needs improvement" home in Garden City. I personally love GC, its setup is very different from other LI towns, there is something European in it, but it is pricey, and while it might not matter to you, it is mostly Catholic population, although, there are a low degree of diversity.
Bellmore, Merrick, Wantagh as well are good areas. You can get a great home there too. I don't think they fall as high on the 'charm' category but I think you'd get something better for your money in those towns as opposed to Syosset or Garden City etc
Lynbrook has a nice area close to Valley Stream and the Hewlett border with Tudor-style homes with character. You could probably get something decent at your price point. The Lynbrook LIRR is a busy station and offers a fast commute.
Another quality alternative is the townhouse development close to Gibson Station near Barrett Park. Nice old homes, a bit like Queens. VS is a bit cheaper.

That part of Lynbrook is really pretty.
The section of North Valley Stream that fits these requirements is called Parkwold. It’s directly off the Southern State Parkway, and a very small neighborhood. It’s almost stunning.
The east side of Valley Stream, between Hendrickson Park and Malverne border also works. Parts of this are referred to as Westwood, a neighborhood that encompasses parts of VS, Lynbrook and Malverne. A fair amount of the Gibson section works, too. In addition to the townhouses, there are Tudor style homes on several Gibson blocks on the east side of the train tracks, also zoned for Hewlett schools.
Many parts of Hewlett and Woodmere are also worth considering. In particular the sections adjacent to East Broadway, parts are sometimes referred to as “Old Woodmere”
Floral Park Village (especially the west end) and Bellerose Village also fit this criteria.
