East Hampton has the global chi-chi brands, but most of the areas out there have nice stores, higher end in many cases. Southhampton has a really nice downtown area.

I have lived in both and prefer South Hampton. The biggest problem in EH is the traffic.

Is this your 1st summer in the Hamptons? What sort of experience are you looking for? To answer your question about East Hampton designer boutiques, yes, EH has the most high-end boutiques. But Southhampton is quite nice too...some people actually prefer it because its a bit more low-key, but still upscale. It all comes down to what experience you're looking for.

Hate it all !
I cant get to my place on Navy road (Montauk)
The Hamptons have to many stuffies, "in-crowders" and Hollywood media whores and thats NOTHING compaired to the traffic now.
It takes over an hour and a half to get from Riverhead to Montauk on a Friday 2PM during summer. (thats leaving Early)
The roads locked up from the Shinnicock to East Hampton, Noyac and through Sag Harbor is even packed now !!!
That Hampton Classic and July 4th is THE PITTS !!!
The Ferrys from the N Fork take the same time.

I went to school in Sag Harbor in the early sixties (Sacred Heart Academy) and it was a totally different world out there then.

I prefer East Hampton, not because the stores are fancier (they are I think), but because it has more of a small town feel. Southampton feels more like a town, while East feels more like a hamlet. Plus, it is central enough that I can choose between going to Montauk, Sag Harbor, or Bridghampton, etc. for dinner or drinks. To go to Montauk from Southampton is a trip and a half. For the time I spend there, I like East Hampton.
Of course, I only live there 75 days (or so) out of the year. If I lived there all year long, I would prefer living in Southampton. There are bigger supermarkets and every day stores and that sort of thing. And you are a little closer to civilization.

what is your age group? Much depends on what you are looking for. The
"Hamptons" pretty much now starts in Remsenburg and ends in Montauk. For shopping, nightlife, etc it's the villages of Southampton and East Hampton. Southampton tends to have the younger crowd - East Hampton - if you aren't already one of the beautiful people, all you can do is shop!

The old school people dont consider anything west of the Shinnecock canal to be "The Hamptons". Not West Hampton or Hampton Bays, which they say were named by real estate developers who wanted to cash in on the Hamptons cache. While I'm sure the people in Remsenburg consider themselves to be part of the Hamptons, many others dont. I find that some people out there can get pretty touchy about stuff like that. I dont see too much of a difference in the landscape myself. The "real" Hamptons do have a lot more history and nicer towns though. If you want to be near the Hamptons, but not pay the high price, one of these towns will suffice. Plus, the ride is a lot shorter if you get off the highway before the merge in Southampton.
