I'd take the north fork over Montauk during the summer season.

I also would take the North Fork in a heartbeat, and another destination to consider is the Adirondacks. Renting a lake front house on something like Brant or Schroon Lake is a complete getaway. If you have a trailerable boat, most lakefront houses have docks. For the kids, Lake George is only 1/2 hour away, and there are lots of nice restaurants around, as well as museums, etc. And Lake Placid is a quick day trip from the area. A nice house would probably start at 2K for a week. The area I mentioned is about 4-5 hours from LI, depending on where you'd be coming from. If you're looking for more of an adult getaway for a few days, I would consider the Friends Lake Inn in Chestertown, NY.

Block Island is very nice if you like a layed back vacation. The ferry ride can be an issue for the weak stomach.....even in good weather.

Finger Lakes! No crowds, wineries, natural beauty, wineries, state parks, lovely bed and breakfasts, I could go on. (Did I mention the wineries?) If you are interested I can pm you some more detailed info- where we've stayed and other favorites.

Thanks Everyone! These are great options. I have never even heard of Block Island...

TeaJay, I would LOVE more info about the Finger Lakes! We were going to go there last summer (my family and I) but we never made it!

I summered on Block as a child...love it, but it, too has become so crowded, etc. Getting there can be a hassle, but we have a Cessna and pop on over at will. If you have to drive to a ferry, depending on where in NY you are, it may be worth it to drive to New London CT. NYC to Montauk to a ferry is CrAzY! NYC to Orient Point is better, but still takes way too long in the summer!

2nd on the FL....it is some of the most gorgeous country and bucolic little towns pop up along the way that herald from another day: Skaneateles is our hands done fav....dining in the Pub at the Sherwood Inn while overlooking the town and north end of the lake is the quinessentilly the perfect end to a day of sight seeing and winery-ing IMO....
