We have a bit of land on Long Island and are interested in building a 12 x 12 cabin on it.
Can anyone tell me:
a) where to read about rules and regs relating to cabins (or additional living spaces, however they're termed)
b) are property taxes increased assuming the cabin has running water and electric
c) is there a limit to how many cabins one can build on their land
d) what other factors might be relevant
Ha. Good luck.
Everything varies by municipalities, so if you even have a shot it would depend on the local zoning laws. Where is the property located and how large is the parcel?
Building codes are set by the individual towns so you would have to check with the local government. But I have to tell you, I don't think any of them would allow something as small as 12 by 12.
Brookhaven does not view these as homes. Someone in my area had one in her side yard. She was told to remove it.

Where did I write motor home?
Brookhaven views tiny houses as accessory structures not unlike a shed. If you view them as a motor home, then they have to be registered with DMV and insured.
