Might be good to get this in writing from any out of area dealer, and I doubt smaller non franchised dealers, private sellers, etc. would have any recourse, service like this. Don't want to drive all the way back to Pittsburgh PA to get that recall or faulty alternator work done...

One thought I had for those purchasing something used is storm and flood damage to L.I. cars. And it does not only apply to vehicles going back to the major storms. I see the south shore flood quite severely on a regular basis and cringe when I see people plowing through salt water, throwing wakes you could surf on several times a year. Even a recently purchased vehicle could have been driven in these conditions.

One possible incentive to going out of area.

I do know the IRS crack down on people who claims residency in FL (no state income tax) but really lives NY.
My friend works for an insurance company. This is a common occurrence. Car insurance in NY, especially in Brooklyn and the Bronx, is crazy expensive compared to places such as FL, VA, NC, etc... Part of the reason is because of the frequency of accidents as well as fraud due to mandatory no fault insurance. Insurance companies routinely investigate and catch people "rate jumping" and routinely deny claims when it is discovered. Insurance is based on where the vehicle is principally garaged aka where it is located most of the time. The reason for this is due to statistics and payout amounts for different areas. Insurance underwriting is a crazy involved game based on large amounts of data.

Its basically insurance fraud in a way. People can hate on insurance all they want. When they finally need them...esp. in a multi-million dollar lawsuit/claim, they are the savior.

Don't get too excited. No salt on the roads and most cars do less than 10,000 miles a year. And when they die it's usually from hitting a building or going into a pool.

The exact term is material misrepresentation and you are absolutely correct.
