Default Another NEWSDAY geographic goof, "Family of 6 OK after escaping burning house"

Another example of NEWSDAY mistaking the community name in a place's mailing address for the community in which that place is located:

Family of 6 OK after escaping burning house -- Newsday.com (broken link)

In the first paragraph, the article states, "Among the heavily damaged walls and floors of a house on Linford Road in the Russell Gardens section of Great Neck ... "

Russell Gardens is not a section of Great Neck: Russell Gardens, just like Great Neck, is a village (a municipal corporation) on the Great Neck peninsula or, if you prefer, in the greater Great Neck area, but not in Great Neck (one village can not be part of another village).

It is important to note that Russell Gardens is one of those many villages and hamlets on Long Island where none of the places in the community have the village name in their mailing address.

For those who may not be familiar with Russell Gardens:

Russell Gardens is a village (incorporated in 1931) in the northwest part of the Town of North Hempstead, in the northwest part of Nassau County.

Beginning on the north and moving in a clockwise direction, the Village of Russell Gardens in the Town of North Hempstead is bordered on the north by the Village of Great Neck Plaza and the Village of Thomaston; on the east by the Village of Thomaston and the Hamlet of University Gardens; on the south by the Hamlet of University Gardens; and, on the west by the Hamlet of University Gardens and the Village of Great Neck Plaza.

Russell Gardens is one of those many villages and hamlets on Long Island where none of the places in the community have the village name in their mailing address: places in the Village of Russell Gardens have a "Great Neck, NY 11021" mailing address.

For a good set of town-by-town maps showing all the villages and hamlets in each of LI's 13 towns (3 in Nassau County and 10 in Suffolk County): http://www.city-data.com/forum/long-...-resource.html
