I just had my inspection and they took off the tint from my front windows. They did leave the back windows and the rear window as I have an SUV. I feel naked now

Looks like they got OP because it was a Sedan. But are these cars not grandfatherd in if not inspected yet?
I read it again. It's only the actual back window that can be tinted if there are 2 side view windows. Which is really strange. My husband got snagged on 2 rear passenger side windows, which are the only tinted glass we have.

I forgot to say the $30 was a fee for just GETTING a ticket. With all the fees, I don't know what it was called at the time.

Administrative fee?
Processing fee?
Driver Responsibility fee?
Public Safety fee?

It cost $30 at the time. Who knows, it may have been raised since then.

Never mind that I fixed the burnt out taillight within 24 hours like I was supposed to. There's still a fee!

My car was inspected last in February 2017 and it passed.

There was no mention of the tint on my two rear passenger side windows.

Now that my inspection is coming up soon, I will mention that.

HappySpring, what did it cost to remove the tint? How long did it take them to do it? TY!

I'll PM you about where to go for inspection, but the tint law is now only SUVs can have their back side windows tinted. Sedans can't have any (use 70% law). While I was waiting for mine to pass, in Dec. 2017, I looked out onto the street as each car passed to see what % of cars still had tint. After about 5 minutes, I'd wager about 1 of 4 still had unacceptable tint on their front windows which is quite amazing considering anybody only had 1 month before inspection for 2017 was due (the no-more-tint year).

They charged me $40.00 and they said it isn't easy to just peel off and that it is a process. They gave me a loaner, so I didn't stick around. I would imagine it would take maybe 2 hours in total for the two windows and inspection.

One question in all of this. How did they know your cars windows were beyond the acceptable threshold in NYS?

There is a machine which is used to pass light through the window to determine this value. If they didn't use this machine, i would fight the ticket all the way. There is no legitimate way to eyeball a window and determine it is beyond the tint limit. The officer should not be writing tickets based on empirical evidence.
