Besides, I miss the rest of my family. So, I am thinking about moving my family back to Long Island. Am I just giving up and leaving all the adventure in my life for good, or will this move be the smartest thing for all of us?

Quick word of advice, the majority of people that troll these boards are LI haters, with many not even living on LI anymore. If this is the case, there must be some draw for them to keep coming back to a board re: a place they don't live.
That being said, I'm sure LI is different in some ways...more people, development, cars, etc. but the same in other ways (nice towns, people, beaches, very safe, etc.). I moved from Queens to LI about 1 year ago and would not move back. I love it here, there's still a ton offered for anyone willing to take it. I think maybe you should come back and stay a little while and see what you think. Also, you know this, but remember how each area is very different (south shore nassau vs. north shore, suffolk vs. nassau, etc.) and maybe judt drive around to see what and where you like and do not. The Garden City hotel is nice (www.gchotel.com)...;o (broken link))
I think the vibe on LI is so different from the places you've lived that you have to see for yourself. It's certainly not LA in many ways.
Are there any spefic questions you have? I think that most of the people responding will be bitter about how crappy it is here, but just take that with a grain of salt. You should tell them about LA traffic...these people don't know how good they have it here.

i know every place has its ups and downs, but there are places that have a way higher quality of living than long island. prices here are the most expensive in the nation, aside from beverly hills in LA. i know the grass is always greener, but places do exist that are way better than LI in all ways possible. and btw, i do live on LI and im not a LI-hater, i'm must frustrated. can you blame me? i know someone who loved long island and grew up here, and now isn't too crazy about it. thats just how it is here. things have changed, mostly for the worse...imo

There are pros and cons to every place. You need to make a visit, do a pros and cons list and determine if Long Island is for you.

Yes, and it is up to you to determine what high "quality of life" entails. There are more than enough people that do not equate cheap homes to high Q of L.

LA? Possibly the only place I could live in that would make me say something positive about LI...
Considered Northern CA? Pricey as here, certainly, but it's NICE.

I'll bet you don't remember the old Garden City Hotel . That was really a classy old place, sort of like Brideshead Revisited or something.
