Do I need a permit for a small front porch? What about replacing an old deck? (Hempstead: house, square footage)

My husband and I are planning to replace our deck this summer. We have an old wooden one and it needs to go. The new deck would be in the same location and the same size. Do we need a permit in the TOH for this?
While we're planning this, I'm toying with the idea of pulling out some large bushes in front of the house and replacing it with a small front porch. Thoughts on permits for this?
I agree about the deck - if the decking planks and rails need replacing, and the footprint is the same, I wouldn't bother with a permit. I did a complete replacement of the surface boards a number of years back as a project. I ripped up a couple of rows of boards, then put in a new row, and so on, so technically I was just repairing not replacing.
If you need to replace the stuff underneath - especially if it doesn't meet code - then you will definitely need a permit.
I never went with a permit for a front porch upgrade either as I pretty much just put stone over the existing brick porch stairs, widening it and did a stone walkway. But again, if you're doing demo of any kind I would.
You do need a permit for both. But, as other's have said if you are just replacing the boards and not the frame on the deck, and it's going to be the same size, I wouldn't bother. If you change the square footage it will come up on the survey when you go to sell.
I built a deck on the front of my last house, TOH.
I did not get no stinking permits or nuttin'. Screw them.
I sold the house without issue.
Also pulled the little trick where the deck is not attached to the house so its basically an over glorified platform. I built it myself because Im just that cool.

Just keep it under 15 inches if memory serves. I might be off but there is a trick to the trick.
Yeah, good luck with that... Just because it doesnt have a ledger bolted to the house, doesnt mean they will look the other way. It's still a deck. I've had to do that where the house is brick veneer and we cant fasten directly to it.
