I never saw a "crime map" for Long Island except on Zillow (and those were very innacurrate).

Answer depends upon who you are, what your bank balance is, what your job is, where you currently live, how you define sketchy.

It could even get more complex than that since there's plenty of people with fat bank accounts and nice jobs living in parts of Garden City that are just a couple blocks away from Hempstead. There's other examples of this throughout the island as well.

Agreed, that is the first part of my response. Who you are? i.e. do you want or need to live near a sketchy area? Do you value $$ in you pocket over living near a sketchy area? Do you have a good downpayment? All of this plays into the decision to "consider" a purchase near a sketch area. Also included in that, to some, having a GC address is the only thing they care about, it makes no difference exactly where it is.

The rule for me and my family is at least one whole town between us and any bad area. For example, I currently live in North Massapequa and we are surrounded by safe neighborhoods. I would think twice before moving to parts of Farmingdale or East Massapequa (or Massapequa Park). Being on the edge of a bad neighborhood seems like it may be too tempting for criminals. If I were single I would live in the bad area if there were some objective reason to and it wouldn't bother me.

A lot of the areas once known as bad on Long Island, aren't really that bad or bad at all anymore. It looks like your examples were alluding to their proximity to North Amityville but..

Even with North Amityville, they took down the trailer parks to build the Greybarn Apartment complexes on Route 110 that are renting like hotcakes that START at $2,300 per month. There's even a new Starbucks nearby that's doing some pretty good business; and some new upmarket large single-family-home subdivisions off Albany Ave that puts anything in Southeast Nassau to shame. There's still some rough patches like most of the Flat Tops but nothing that's quite worth avoiding like the plague anymore.

Bad is relative and based on personal opinion.
I think Garden City, The 5 Towns, and similar hoods are bad.
Just as "bad" as Wyandanch, Hempstead, etc, but in a different way.
