No matter what the assessed value is, the schools and gov still need their money so they mess with the rate or something like that so even if your assessment goes down, your taxes still go up

Yeah. That's my luck.
And I got screwed on the house we bought after that too.
Maybe I was just young and dumb. Didn't realize what a sham home ownership in Nassau County was.
Went from 7k a year to 12k a year in under 9 years.
The system is set up for heads I win, tails you lose.
No matter what the assessed value is, the schools and gov still need their money so they mess with the rate or something like that so even if your assessment goes down, your taxes still go up. The increases slowed a little in the few years following Sandy but by then I'd had enough and decided to sell.
Got tired of finding ways to make more money to line other people's pockets, especially given the fact that I was living in an area that I was just miserable being there. In my mind it just had nothing going for it. Traffic, lousy rude people, shopping and a train station were not ammenities as far as I was concerned.
Does go to show how different the opinions of good and bad can be.
The couple we sold to felt like they hit lotto and won the American dream.
I couldn't collect my money and run fast enough.
Trust me you aren’t alone when I first bought my house I didn’t have the first CLUE about the true costs of ownership, repairs, maintenance, and how much taxes would go up. I was also naive young and dumb and paid for it.
Sorry if this is a dumb question, but we have to let them in our house and walk through each room? Or they just walk around outside of property?
They are not allowed in your house. They can go to your front door that is it. They will use google earth or do flyover for illegal extensions decks and pool. I was told not sure how "true" it is. If you have a awesome exterior they will assume your inside is amazing and tax you more. I was told this 3 years ago hence why I have marble in 1/2 my house and the original 1955 concrete driveway and walkway.
Basically sounds like a big reset button over all the grievances and nothing more. I doubt they are going front door to front door. Also, Google Maps still has images of our house from too long ago.
2 years ago i lived in Westchester and they did a town-wide reassessment. They hired a company to do that . They were going house to house. Homeowners had an option to not let them in. Based on feedback from friends, everyone who let them in got higher taxes. I and another group of people I know did not let them in and our taxes were unchanged.
They don't actually go to your door or even on your property.
It's drive by's in conjunction with google earth or whatever satellite imaging they use.
At least that's what they did the last time.
Poor bastard was sitting out in front my house for like 10 minutes, so I went out and pulled him out of the car and started pummeling him until he had a chance to squeak out his identity and badge. Still didnt believe him at first so I kept shaking him up until I was sure he was legit.
Then I thought about the situation and what it meant so I beat him up a little more.
I did apologize afterwards. Hey, in todays world you just never know. I thought he was some creeper or skell casing my house.

.
That's worse than ours $4900 to $12K in less than 10 years. Taxes on that house are now over $15K. Going along at the pace we predicted when we decided to get out. Figured they would be $17,500 by the time our youngest graduated HS and she's in 8th grade now so right on target.
But I know people who've been hit harder. Like $7K a year to over $20K. It is absolute insanity to pay that. I don't care where you live.
