Glen Cove neighborhood
I'm interested to purchase a house on Jerry Lane in Glen Cove, LI. But I'm afraid to because I keep hearing mix opinions about this area. Can someone please tell me exactly how the Glen Cove area is like...in particularly to where Jerry Lane is??? Is it a safe neighborhood??? How is the school district??? I keep hearing mix things about the school district...of course the real estate agent tells me that it's an excellent school district. Also, is the town of Glen Cove a nice town? Thanks!!!

For those who may not be familiar with Glen Cove:
Glen Cove is a city (chartered in 1918) in the north central part of Nassau County. There are 2 cities (Glen Cove and Long Beach) and 3 towns (North Hempstead, Hempstead and Oyster Bay) in Nassau County.
Beginning on the north and moving in a clockwise direction, the City of Glen Cove is bordered on the north by Long Island Sound; on the east by the Village of Lattingtown and the Village of Matinecock in the Town of Oyster Bay; on the south by the Hamlet of Glen Head and the Village of Sea Cliff in the Town of Oyster Bay; and, on the west by Long Island Sound.
The City of Glen Cove has a different border than does the "Glen Cove, NY 11542" ZIP Code postal zone (i.e., a place can have a "Glen Cove, NY 11542" mailing address and not be in the City of Glen Cove): places that have a "Glen Cove, NY 11542" mailing address that are not in the City of Glen Cove are in the Village of Lattingtown and the Village of Matinecock in the Town of Oyster Bay.
For a good set of town-by-town maps showing all the villages and hamlets in each of LI's 13 towns (3 in Nassau County and 10 in Suffolk County): http://www.city-data.com/forum/long-...-resource.html

Seems like it's in a nice area, of course not sure wheren on Jerry Lane. That being said, I think that most of Glen Cove itself is quite nice...there's estate like secitons, and a very nice Italian section of "normal" houses. I think there are just some interesting parts near the downtown.
The schools are not that great, though, as a result. Any reason for GC proper? Perhaps you could also look at Locust Valley (LV SD) or Glenwood Landing/Sea Cliff (excellent North Shore SD), which are right in the same area.

Unless Google Maps has lied to me, that's in the Southridge section right by the elementary school, definitely a safe neighborhood. I think the school district gets a much worse reputation than it deserves based on the fact that it's not one of those north shore Ivy League prep schools...but does that make it bad? Absolutely not....it's just more middle of the road than the surrounding areas. Glen Cove has some pockets of unimaginable wealth, some middle class areas (like Southridge) and then there are some other areas that are a little run down, lots of illegal apartments. It's a big city (for Long Island) and "diverse" in every respect, but on the whole extremely nice.
If you want your kids to go to one of those schools where they're guaranteed acceptance into Harvard, I believe a few blocks further south from Jerry Ln is Glen Head and thus North Shore SD (or Locust Valley SD, I'm not sure which)....

Glen Cove is isolated though. Be prepared to spend at least 45 minutes to one hour trying to get out of the area to travel anywhere (Hicksville,Garden City, etc). Takes 30 minutes just to get to the LIE. Most of the time spent at the notorious Glen Cove Road+25A intersection in Greenvale, where you often have to sit through 5 or more lights. Backs up north to past Back rd.
Unless you like spending time sitting in traffic, I'd avoid Glen Cove. It's part of the reason why property values are lower there than Port Wash or Great Neck. Plus the LIRR Oyster Bay line isn't electrified and takes a long time.
Yes there are some nice sections of Glen Cove in the northern half of town, but the southern sections (esp The Hill Projects and the Glen st area) are ghetto and full of illegals. The schools will be full of illegals too. A not fancy but decent school district is North Shore, which serves Sea Cliff and Glen Head.

Traffic in and around Glen Cove is pretty bad, no major parkways/highways anywhere close and a high population density. Knowledge of back roads is valuable, just look out for Brookville cops. It's definitely an OK neighborhood to live, I don't think Johninwestbury is familiar with that area. It's in the southeast corner of Glen Cove, the Glen Head border cuts right through.

Yeah I know that area, around Frost Pond road. It's a nice area but the traffic is bad, very bad. If only they constructed both Glen Cove road and route 107 as highways with no lights, but when you add traffic lights with a high volume road its a mess.

The northern end of 107 becomes a limited access highway for about a mile or so....too little too late! Thankfully I never have any important business to tend to up there, I'd never be on time. Best bet is always country back roads, may not be any faster but might add a few years to your life.

I used to live in Oyster Bay, same thing but not a bad as Glen Cove. Back roads were the way to commute. Chicken Valley Road if you could believe that exists on LI, in Nassau! I kinda liked it, being tucked away on the North Shore.
