I always enjoyed reading the comments on Newsday.com since the paper has steadily moving left while forgetting that most of Long Island is 50/50 GOP/DNC. The online comments mostly countered the ultra-liberal editorials and letters.

Hey, I admit: I re-subscribed to Newsday two months ago because I got a great 6 months offer. The paper will go bye-bye after the introductory rate is over.

BUT: censorship at Newsday.com by no longer allowing comments?

Funny how the press hiding by the first amendment is surpressing everyone else

Comment sections are for the lowest of the low. Only the trashiest post and reading it is pure comedy.

I think comments have their place. Like after watching a movie, you want to see others' thoughts and one place to go was IMDB. They've since done away with their comments also because it wasn't very productive. It's really too bad - but like many situations, people only comment when they have a complaint or something nasty to say.

The worst part of it is having to find a place to talk about it. So a news story happens on LI, where do we go to discuss? Here? Reddit LI? Somewhere centralized would be best.

I believe they said they were in the process of implementing a new comments system - disabling the current one for now.

They used to have their own comments system where (I think) people could post anonymously. This led to some pretty vile comments on there, as you can imagine. Then they switched to requiring a Facebook logon to comment, but I assume people just made fake profiles just to comment on Newsday without their actual friends seeing what horrible people they were. Guess we will see what they try next.

They went to Facebook-only commenting allowed because they thought people would tone it down if their real IDs were known, no such luck. Wonder what they will come up with next.

Free press squelching free speech. How does that work?

There was seriously a lot of racism/implied racism in that comment section. I don't know why they just couldn't have someone monitor and delete them though, they would rarely get over 20 comments on any article.

I haven't seen any, really. Just a lot of pushback by conservatives/Trump supporters against the liberal reporting. But racism? Maybe here and there but not widespread.
