Another example of NEWSDAY mistaking the community name in a place's mailing address for the community in which that place is located:
Hempstead Town approves Island Park condo complex -- New York, Town of Hempstead -- Newsday.com (broken link)
In the first paragraph, the article states, "Developers can now move forward to replace an 11-acre contaminated site on Harbor Isle in Island Park ... "
Harbor Isle is not in Island Park.
Harbor Isle may share a ZIP Code postal zone ("Island Park, NY 11558") with the Village of Island Park, but as a hamlet, Harbor Isle is not in the Village of Island Park.
That's why zoning approvals are the responsibility of the Town of Hempstead and not, if it was in Island Park, the Village of Island Park.
It is important to note that Harbor Isle is one of those many villages and hamlets on Long Island where none of the places in the community have the hamlet name in their mailing address.
For those who may not be familiar with Harbor Isle:
Harbor Isle is a hamlet (an unincorporated area) in the southwest part of the Town of Hempstead, in the southwest part of Nassau County.
Beginning on the north and moving in a clockwise direction, the Hamlet of Harbor Isle in the Town of Hempstead is bordered on the north by Wreck Neck Channel; on the east by the Village of Island Park; on the south by Reynolds Channel; and, on the west by Wreck Neck Channel.
Harbor Isle is one of those many villages and hamlets on Long Island where none of the places in the community have the hamlet name in their mailing address: places in the Hamlet of Harbor Isle have an "Island Park, NY 11558" mailing address.
For a good set of town-by-town maps showing all the villages and hamlets in each of LI's 13 towns (3 in Nassau County and 10 in Suffolk County):
