I have always thought it would be a good idea if power companies carved utility poles like Totem Poles. Pacific Northwest themes might not apply to the Island, but carvings of lighthouses, seagulls, etc. would work better. Unfortunately, ego and self promotion being what it is, if it were left to the government, the local politicians and/or utility executives would want their faces carved into the poles.

Anyhow, for your perusal, below is the Google Image result that came up when I typed "Totem Utility Pole" into search browser...

I would love a totem pole on my front lawn with all headhunters on it. Pudo-ce-bagumba!

This might enhance any home security system as a side benefit...

A totem of Ship's Figureheads might be another theme that would work well on the Island (especially in towns like Greenport, Sag Harbor, etc.) The problem facing this is many figureheads are a carving of a woman quite often showing a little too much "cleavage", so not PG-13 rated, and likely to catch heat from municipalities...

I have one in my backyard. Always thought it was weird and wondered if it would be a potential hazard. Then I thought there’s no way major companies would carry that kind of liability if it was potentially dangerous. For what it’s worth, my kids are young and have never gone near it. We haven’t done anything fancy to hide it.

There is no liability to the utility. The pole is their property and should be noted in your survey.

Isn't it like having a tree in the yard but with wires attached to it?
Do kids run into trees?
