Hello All,
My wife and I recently purchased a home in Mineola. I had conducted a bit of research on the area such as schools, population, rental issues and the overall feel for the town. The home we purchased is located on the Southern edge of Mineola, off Old Country Road across the street from Garden City. We liked Tudor style homes and Long Island is not exactly saturated with those types of homes. If anyone has any opinions, comments ( both pro and con are welcomed), complaints or praise for the town please enlighten me. As it is my first home I have a knot in my stomach as it is. The town seems well kept with a sold community and an ideal location. A cousin of my wife is not only a resident but is also a Nassau County school teacher so we were briefed on the school situation. The only evident "con" to my purchase is it's proximity to Old Country Road. I made a point of being there during rushhour, on Saturday, when the L.I.R.R. travels past and at night prior to purchasing the home. I will never know the area until I spend some time there. All opinions and advice are welcomed. Thank You in advance.

Old Country Road has killer traffic over by where you are going to live.

Congrats on your new home. I have always liked Mineola. Proximity to shopping, highways, and LIRR. Mineola Blvd has nice restaurants and pubs. Try the St. James and Eleanor Rigby's.

The area you picked is very pretty and stands out due to the Tudors and archways present at the begining of the streets. The fact that the train tracks are just north of you should prevent a lot of traffic from going down your street. As far as Old Country Road, you'll get used to it. I'm a block north of Hempstead Turnpike, and I very rarely notice the noise anymore.

Good Luck!

PS Get to know Westbury Ave. Pick it up north of Old Country Road just over RR tracks on Roslyn Road. It parallels OCR, is much nicer to drive on, and will bring you out to Westbury at School street. Very useful for Saturdays and Holiday shopping traffic detouring.

Mazel tov!

For those who may not be familiar with Mineola:

Mineola is a village (incorporated in 1906) in the south-central part of the Town of North Hempstead, in the west part of Nassau County, along the North Hempstead/Hempstead town line.

Beginning on the north and moving in a clockwise direction, the Village of Mineola in the Town of North Hempstead is bordered on the north by the Hamlet of Herricks, The Village of Williston Park, the Village of East Williston and the Hamlet of Roslyn Heights; on the east by the Village of Old Westbury, the Village of Westbury and the Hamlet of Carle Place; on the south by the Village of Garden City in the Town of Hempstead (the North Hempstead/Hempstead town line); and on the west by the Hamlet of Garden City Park.

The Village of Mineola has a different border than does the "Mineola, NY 11501" ZIP Code postal zone (i.e., a place can have a "Mineola, NY 11501" mailing address and not be in the Village of Mineola and a place can be in the Village of Mineola and have other than a "Mineola, NY 11501" mailing address): places that have a "Mineola, NY 11501" mailing address that are not in the Village of Mineola are in the Village of Garden City in the Town of Hempstead; and, at the same time, there are places in the Village of Mineola with a "Williston Park, NY 11596" and "Carle Place, NY 11514" mailing address.

For a good set of town-by-town maps showing all the villages and hamlets in each of LI's 13 towns (3 in Nassau County and 10 in Suffolk County): http://www.city-data.com/forum/long-...-resource.html

Congrats. I live in Garden City, south of OCR. Yes, from 5-6 it's kinda tough, but most of the time the convenience of being near OCR far outweighs the headaches.

It's a nice town...my good friend's wife is from Juniper St, 1 block north of OCR...nice little area with the Tudors, etc. I think the value of the house will only rise with the redevelopment of the downtown area..and it's coming. There's a proposal for a luxury condo building on OCR by Willis Ave...it'll be a nice boost.

Be sure to check out Mo Joe coffee by the train station...excellent place. Also, the little Greek place on Mineola Blvd is pretty good, too.

Are you from LI?
