Same problem here.
My plan of attack is
1. spray spectradcide carpenter bee killer in all holes
2. wait for 2 days then stuff the holes with steel wool followed by glued dowl.
3. stain or oil based paint in winter.

They're actually pretty abundant this year.
I just ignore them. They seem pretty aggressive but I haven't been attacked. Yet.
