I am confident that if Lake Grove did not incorporate, Hawkins Avenue would look much like it does down in Lake Ronkonkoma, with storefronts all along the road. As soon as you cross Smith Road, you can see an immediate difference. But, Lake Grove has been incorporated for 40 years now. I think incorporation can be a great thing, but people should not expect things to change overnight. There are a lot of good, hard-working people in the Mastic/Shirley area who take care of their homes and what has happened to the area over the years is just a shame. Do they plan to incorporate the entire Mastic/Shirley area as 1 village? Or 2 separate villages? 1 village would be too large, in my opinion.

I am not sure if being a village makes it a better place just because its a village. Hempstead and Freeport are both villages and are considered the least desirable areas in Nassau county. In Westchester, Scarsdale is a village while Chappaqua is a hamlet, but both are equally desirable. Garden city is a village while Jericho is a hamlet.

Actually, WJFM, Scarsdale is simultaneously BOTH a village and a town, a coterminous town-village.
A coterminous town-village is where the town and the village have the same name and have the same exact border and the town supervisor/town board and the village mayor/board of trustees are the same.
Three of the 5 coterminous town-villages are in Westchester County (Harrison, Mount Kisco and Scarsdale), one is in Albany County (Green Island) and one is in Monroe County (East Rochester).

Interesting. I did know that. What is the main difference between village and town. For this Mastic/Shirley case, can they incorporate themselves as a town instead?

A town is a major municipality and includes both villages and hamlets within its borders.

In order for Mastic/Shirley to become a town, they would have to secede from the Town of Brookhaven, a somewhat lengthy and expensive process.
