Within the past month, Ive seen people asking for money at farmingdale Walmart, Target in copague and in toys r us in Massapequa parking lot. What is the deal with this sudden urge to beg for money on Long island?

Yet at the same time Newsday says that home prices are going up and there is no supply. Both can’t be true?

There was a story the other day in Newsday about Mineola considering a ban on angressive panhandling. (Though most panhandling tends to be aggressive.) I would think panhandling on private property like store parking lots could be banned by the store/landlord if they wanted to. You have no constitutional right to panhandle on private property.

Home prices are going up...so is the poverty level. LI is home rich (and debt laden) and cash poor. If the bubble busts, it will be ugly. There is no supply because there is no buildable land (and what is there is too expensive for home builders, investors and speculators). Nimby's make sure nothing but single family homes and Walgreens get developed. Demographics changing, per capita falling. Home prices are all we've got. Some might call that a bubble.

People on LI have always been begging in so many aspects in life. We showed an apt the other day to a couple. They begged us to waive the security deposit of all things. We said good bye fast.

Last month I saw a guy sitting against the wall of King Kullen in Bay Shore with a cardboard sign asking for money. When I came out of the store, a cop car was there and he was told to move along, which he did. I watched him walk to the far corner of the parking lot, which is where I was parked. He got into a nice car, better than what I'm driving.
